Kanji is too deep into the Naoto rabbit hole to not be bi, if not simply questioning to straight.

Though him getting really cozy with Yosuke during operation babe hunt was sus, among tons of other moments, so Id totally buy that hes bi and that theres some inner drama in Altus between writers that keep trying to push for LGBT representation and a higher up thats just not having it,
considering how many gay subplots have gotten nixed. >_>

I did. Kanji wasnt phased seeing Yukiko and Chie in bathing suits. Dude didnt care at all. If seeing best girl Yukiko like that doesn't make your dinker donger heavy, that's crazy

What I ultimately figured was that Kanji's a straight dude who has some girly hobbies and is insecure about it.

I think Atlus dropped the ball with his character. He could've been a gay dude who's ashamed of his homosexuality and uses hyper-masculinity as a cover, but really he's just a straight dude who's worried someone might find out he likes girly stuff. His whole character arc boils down to him accepting that there's nothing wrong with him liking girly stuff, it's really superficial quite honestly.

I think that's considered diversity in Japan though. They don't do the SJW thing, especially not when this game was originally released.

It's like they copied the plot from a teen soap opera but didn't realize that the guy is overcompensating because he likes men not because he likes short shorts and knitting.

I'm thinking the Japanese writers thought that he was attracted to Naoto who is actually a girl so he's straight. It doesn't matter that he thought he was a man the because his dick knew more than his brain. That's my guess anyway.

I think it's also possible that the Western writers took it a bit further during localization but still had some limits.

That's a fine storyline, you still see people in a more liberal society like the US insisting a male must be gay if they knit or have traditional feminine hobbies.

And Yosuke got his gay romance chopped, Kanji at no point had one.

The thing is, the shadows don't lie. They exaggerate but they're spitting hard truth.

For half of the game he has a blatant crush on someone he thinks is a dude

Like someone else stated I bet a higher up straight up axed the idea because he didn't like the idea of an actual gay person in the game. No, he's just a straight dude who took up a couple girly hobbies and overcompensates by being a street thug but with a heart of gold, which is a cookie cutter trope in Japanese entertainment. I remember seeing the exact same character archetype in Yu Yu Hakusho with Kuwabara, but I'm sure it goes back further than that.

As for him being attracted to Naoto, I interpreted that to mean that he was attracted to her femininity, which further increased his insecurity because he thought she was a dude at the time. Naoto's androgynous as fuck, doing the whole pretty girl pretending to be a pretty boy in boy clothes thing, which is again a cookie cutter stereotype.
