At that point you're probably better just spending the extra $80 for a second console because at least it should theoretically retain value

That's kinda crazy. I feel like they could have come up with a way for any 3rd party SSD to work.

they did. this is for the proprietary NVMe slot.

they're actually charging market value for this, though I doubt it will decrease in price over time to keep up

Oh I had heard it was locked to their proprietary SSD and no third party allowed. So that's good news if true cause we can just ignore this thing lol.

Sony ones will probably be around the same price or cheaper this Fall, but they'll get cheaper over time, especially as PCI-E4 becomes more common.

That's not SSD though right?
Maybe I'm crazy but for SSD the price doesn't seem terrible. You are paying for the lightning fast SSD, right?

Isn't PS5 allowing any HD to be swapped in? IIRC Cerny said the only issue was whether it would actually physically fit in the console.

Any PCI-E4 SSD that meets the required speed specs.

That price isn't too crazy considering a typical 1 TB m.2 SSD from a reliable brand retails for ~$180 these days but man do we really need proprietary hardware when all of these things are just tiny PCs in different shells at this point?

The plug and play functionality seems a bit unique? I assume you can't put m.2 drives into PCs while they're running. But yeah, if Sony can do it, MS should be able to too.
