The US is also about to surpass Italy. It was not long ago that Sweden had 40% more deaths than the US per capita. South America is being hit hard by the virus now as well.

Italy is #11 with 588 dead per 1 million people. A total of 35 541 dead.

The US is #12 with 583 dead per 1 million people. A total of 193 253 dead.

Sweden is #13 with 577 dead per 1 million people. A total of 5835 dead.

In england they have a conservative government and boris johnson, who's strategy was delayed and inept. In Scotland we have Nicola Sturgeon, who took swifter and more severe action, and everyone more or less agreed that it was the right thing to do.

But it's also worth noting that scotland is just less dense over all. Geographically and dare I say reason-wise.

Trump will certainly not encourage those measures this close to election no matter how many lives he'd save. He's already responsible for over 100 thousand dead Americans because he politicized the response in the first place

You have to take the list with a grain of salt. Different countries count deaths differently, and to compound the problem further, different levels of access to healthcare will conceal deaths as well. The statistic that is perhaps the best for comparing between countries is uh, I don't know the term in English but essentially "over mortality". That is, compare the number of deaths to the seasonal average going back a few years. Obviously a much blunter metric but less sensitive to e.g., differences in counting, or artifacts of bad sampling.
