I think the world may never fully recover from MGSV.

I still wonder what Kojima intended by the car ride.

The release of MGS is now closer to the debut of the Apple II computer than the present.

The release of the original Metal Gear is now closer to the first television appearance by Elvis than the present.

Still the most disappointing game I've ever played.

Thank goodness Death Stranding was fantastic so I can continue blaming Konami for this shit show.

I knew exactly what this topic was about before I even clicked on it. Gameplay is amazing, but the game itself is unfinished.

Coincidentally that's what I have been playing the last few days

This gameplay is so incredibly smooth, nothing else comes close to how good the stealth is. If only it was finished, could easily have taken game of the decade.

It's a common take and it's only really wrong in that Kojima was definitely at fault for MGSV. Even with full Konami support it would've sucked.

yeah MGSV is definitely a mixture of both. a lot of resources directed into **** no one really cares about in MGSV (like the multiplayer) instead of maybe finishing the game.

Oh I know its common, its still bizarre when the bad parts of MGS V (unfulfilling story) are shared by Death Stranding, and the good parts (incredible sandbox gameplay) are just miles above it.

For every man you have to watch this helicopter shit before and after every mission there are a dozen man I have to watch him load and unload/take an elevator every delivery.

Kojima games are clearly not the sum of their parts. I haven't played DS but people find something real with it's narrative there that really delivers (pun intended). Especially with how prescient it is.

There's plenty of games where you can sneak around and kill people in an open world so it's just not that important that V has a really good version of that.

I actually like the car ride? I don't know, I think it's funny and also really kind of haunting at the same time.

I'm more curious about how Kojima screwed up Skullface so bad. Generally I really like the idea of him as a character and he was really intriguing/sadistic in Ground Zeroes, but he's like totally goofy in Phantom Pain.

More about what I mean:
XOF being a shadow organization of FOX: okay cool. The idea that Skullface and XOF were there during Operation Snake Eater? Lame and inconsequential.

Skullface being the reason why Zero/the Patriots becomes soulless and driven by an AI? Good - Zero's descent needed to be addressed. Skullface hating Zero for basically no reason except he represents colonnialism? Okay, but that's it, really?.

The whole idea bout a linguistic virus? Interesting and very MGS. I Code Talker/ Midichlorians, I mean, parasites? Dumb as hell.

I like all those ideas that you mentioned but the main problem is they are rehashes of previous MGSes. They are not interesting on their own. It makes them feel lazy and wasted. Even the vocal parasites are just the prequel to nanomachines and foxdie.

It's very odd how MGS feels the need to constantly explain things that were already explained in previous games.
  • Big Boss survived MG? No, it was a different guy.
  • Big Boss is Snake's father? No, Snake is just a clone.
  • The Pain has bee powers because he had a queen bee? No, it was a vocal cord parasite.
  • Psycho Mantis is psychic? No, it was a vocal cord parasite. Except he was actually psychic maybe because he shows up as a ghost?
  • Otacon thought he was good at building giant robots and stealth technology? Actually, they've been around for years.
  • Ocelot was possessed by a ghost? No, he was just faking it. Except he actually was possessed, but only for a brief period of time.
  • Big Boss sneaked through Russia and left only the traces he wanted to leave because he's just that good, and also wanted the Russians to know he was there? No, Skull Face was always in the area just behind him, cleaning up his mess.
  • Big Boss wanted to start a constant war? No, he was trying to live by The Boss' philosophy.
  • Big Boss attracted people to his side via his charisma and skill? No, he got the money to do so by adventuring in South America.
  • Snake didn't use CQC in MGS1 because it wasn't invented yet in real life? No, he chose not to use it lol.
I'm not saying that these are bad, but they are weird.

The series had almost as many prequels as sequels. At a certain point it catches up to you. Its prequels are 3, V, PW (and PO). Its linear sequel games are MG1/2, MGS1, 2 and 4. Given the short length of the main games and the fact you play as Raiden in 2, the series chronologically spends considerably more time establishing Big Boss than it does letting you play as Snake.

That led to retcons and "oh THAT'S how that happened" stuff because it's audience expectation for a prequel.

I mean those observations are correct but since MGS2 came out (not counting Revengeance) there's been one game set after it and 4 set before it (Not counting Ground Zeroes). It was kind of expected once the series went in this direction.

I think at least half of what Anagram listed was a pretty good addition to the series. Some stuff gets cheapened though, especially things that MGSV introduced. (Although V himself was a great reveal.)

Yeah, I don't mind any of the developments Anagram posted except the Skullface/XOF in MGS3 stuff

In hindsight, I think "Old Snake" was a bad idea because it pretty much guaranteed the series can't continue except through prequels and remakes. But I think Kojima was pretty much "OK, this is it, I'm ending it FOR REAL THIS TIME." MGS IV is not as bad as a lot of people say it is, but Old Snake sucks. If Konami ever did decide to make a Kojima-less MGS game, I imagine they'd have to come up with some clever way to fix/de-age Snake.
