I know that Robotech ends up transitioning into two completely unrelated shows because of American syndication shenanigans, but I heard that overall the macross arc isnt that different from the original. BeyondWalls 08/14/20 12:05:50 AM #7:	It's not an easy question. But I'd vote Robotech, for the most part. The English voice acting for Robotech is miles above the voice acting for English Macross. Also, unless you're REALLY into Japanese theme music (where the intro sounds like its sung by a Japanese lounge lizard) then I suggest Robotech. Robotech gets a little dodgy when they try to shoehorn stuff in that's not actually happening (like the SDF2), but overall those instances are pretty minor. It's everywhere. Just google it. Be sure to google the whole Jetfire/Skyfire/Veritech incident. Carl Macek swore in an interview that Hasbro was trying to sabotage the show. I still have the novels from the 90s out in my garage. They're the definitive version of Robotech in my mind. I watched it years ago on Hulu. There's also two versions of Robotech online right now (I believe both are on Tubi.) There's the original broadcast version (which I end up watching) and there's the updated version they made like 15 years ago with a better transfer, nudity, and updated graphics. If you finish the Macross Saga then I highly recommend the Invivd Saga as well. The Robotech Masters Saga is the weakest part. It's probably the weakest looking visually and seems kind of disjointed because it's the series that got cut up the worst. But it's not the worst thing in the world. The Masters storyline becomes really important if you move past the cartoon into like the books. But the books do it WAY more justice. I have a complicated love/hate relationship with the Masters saga because the anime they cut up to make it had an interesting story in itself and while some of that gets brought back into the books, it's just wiped away in the cartoon. Like the Japanese version isn't even set on Earth, it's a colony in deep space. But as a kid you didn't know that, you just sit there wondering when Rick Hunter is going to show back up. So many people don't give credit to the original work because Harmony Gold has the Macross license and doesn't actually want to distribute the series properly in the west. They're more like spin off series that I guess are set in the same universe, but sometimes you start to wonder. It's not like it's the continuing adventures of Rick Hunter.
