You really think riots will happen cuz of this? This is honestly so dumb, the country is in shambles, the whole system was so flimsy and another stupid thing is everyone who lost health coverage is going to get fined next year come tax season. Super stupid. I couldn't imagine being in the work force right now, so much pressure.

most people are horribly irresponsible with money, and probably a lot already misused this money, as they will do with all the money they make when they get back to work

This is why you always opt to have them take taxes from unemployment. So you won't have to end up paying anything later if not a small amount at worst.

Hate to say it, but some people really did it to themselves, so it's hard to empathise with all of them.

what a fuckin' take

It's the truth. Some people have the money to pay rent, but just want to get out of paying rent and want to squat for free and want their landlords to cover all the expenses, which is unrealistic to say the least.

Some people won't have money to pay rent once this aid dries up. Not about wanting to get out of it. There aren't enough jobs to go around and they don't have the money because they lost their job due to the pandemic. Should they really be thrown out on the street simply because the government can't pull its head out of its ass?

Extra 600 is still a lot. 300-400 plus what the state gives you should be good enough for a vast majority.

Although I do agree that I wouldnt be paying rent as long as I didnt have a job if I were in that situation.

Here in Maryland it seems like if you opted to take taxes out, that didn't actually happen. From several anecdotes, so take with a grain of salt. So I'm guessing a bunch of people think they are getting taxes taken out, but aren't, and will get screwed come tax season.

I don't know how US tax works. How are they screwed?

They'll be required to pay what they owe in taxes in bulk when they file taxes. If you thought you were paying income tax but weren't, you very likely won't be prepared for that type of expense.

You can literally see if they take taxes from each benefit payment. If anyone opted for taxes to be taken and are still receiving their full benefit amount for each week they certify that is a obvious red flag that they didn't opt for taxes to be taken, or they should contact the Department of Labor because there has been a mistake.

Instead of opting into withholding for taxes my girlfriend is putting whatever excess money she is making over her usual income into her savings. As long as she doesnt owe enough to pay a penalty at tax time (about $1000 usually) it should work out fine. If she does owe more than $1000 she can just put some money into her retirement account to lower her tax burden below that amount.

they'll be thrown out on the street because they aren't paying someone to live in their property, and they do not own property of their own.

This was a golden opportunity for people to pay off their debt, get their Bill's up to date, and or build up a few months of savings. If their still on the edge after this gravy train and about to be evicted..... I have zero sympathy.

It would be prison and that's usually reserved for people that deliberately evade taxes. What would really happen is they'd have you pay back the amount owed fine you 0.5% of the amount for each month you fail to pay it back.
Each year you fail to pay is 1 year in federal prison.

That of course is assuming they decide to audit them in the first place, which is unlikely but can happen.

People should be better at money management.

That said, you notice there's a certain type of poster who will drag regular working folks over this issue, but not all the horribly managed companies begging for bailouts. Why didn't they save for a rainy day?

I agree. $600 additional each week in unemployment is a lot extra of money for the average person.

For sure, but realistically speaking how much money do you thing your average joe can save? Everybody should strive for a few months worth of bills, but a full year is ridiculous. For a lot of people this will be a situation that wont be fixed in a few months. A lot of jobs will disappear and wont.come back.
