yeah they have a really low reoffend rate because their prisons focus on rehabilitation where as the US prison system focuses on punishment and doesnt care if the prisoners go out and continue committing crimes
they actually prefer it that way since most prisons in america are for profit

This, and any attempt at fixing this system will open someone up to attack ads of them sympathizing with rapists, pedophiles and murderers

It's also where people do shit like this with no fear of repercussions because they'll get 3 months in minimum security facility with video games, puppy rooms, wifi lounges etc

Of the 1.5 million people in state and federal prisons in 2016, 8.5 percent, or 128,063, were incarcerated in private prisons.

Police intercepted millions of messages including that of one of the suspects, a 40-year-old man from The Hague. Investigators were able to access his contacts via an Encrochat phone.

After locating the containers in April in Wouwse Plantage, near the Belgian border, police put the area under observation and found that multiple men were working on them almost every day. When the containers were almost finished, investigators decided to intervene.

Nice, the first article didn't make it clear they weren't used yet. Glad to know they weren't.

okay, but the punitive method is obviously flawed as well. In the US people get comically large sentences for extremely minor offenses and have a very high rate of returning to prison due to it being punitive and making the rest of your life harder to lead successfully. the fact that prison facilities are nicer in the Netherlands isn't the issue, it is that serious criminals get very minor sentences, I don't think that such a short sentence can possibly rehabilitate someone who does something so horrible.

The prisons that aren't private are still producing profit through the labor of the severely low paid labor of the incarcerated.

The right equalibrium between rehabilitation and punishment is hard one to find. In any event the detention facilities that war criminals get in The Hague and the Scandinavian spas are way too plush considering they aren't in there for rehabilitation.

Really the big focus shouldn't be on being tough on crime, but rather which punitive/rehabilitative policies are best for keeping crime low and society safe

And the best way to do that is to give torturers, murderers, fraudsters etc a nice puppy room and queen size bed to stay in for 6 months after committing their atrocities

Given the evidence we have about crime and recidivism rates, apparently so.
