This point was just brought up on the podcast. I personally have no opinion on any of this voice acting stuff.

I was thinking about this the other day. I think they're safe because
1) They've basically got the market locked down, I don't think Twitter warriors complaining about stuff like the Big Mouth character (if there even were any) are the demographic watching Funimation besides maybe BnHA
2) Tons of people seriously believe that anime characters are white and that Japan draws their characters white, and you'd have to break through that massive misconception to talk about the race thing
3) All the VAs are on the hook for the same thing so there's no way for them to do "justice" without them voluntarily shutting down the industry as we know it, and this animation race issue is simply not heated enough to motivate that

If that's the case, then there aren't even enough Asian-American voice actors in the industry to voice all of those characters in all of the various dubs these companies do. Then you have characters that aren't even human. How do you decide who voices those?

I'm all for promoting diversity and giving minorities more opportunities, but saying "everyone voices characters of their race" isn't the way to do it.

Im kind if leaning that way. I kind of think more minorities should just voice white characters or be considered with everyone else. It's crazy how it's not so common when there are so many minorities born in America that just sound American anyway.

Nah, twitter warriors make up a pretty significant part of the anime fanbase even if they try to deny it. A lot of controversies in anime come from obscure anime even regular casual anime fans dont know about which no one would be aware of if they didnt watch anime. The whole colored hair thing is associated with anime. I mean, one of the major appeal of anime is how it breaks gender norms which is something they love. The over-sexualization in a lot of shows is the main thing that turns them off and will have them trashing the medium but mark my words there is definitely a bigger ratio of them in anime fanbases than in western animation fanbases.

Although this trend of actors removing themselves from voicing other races thing seems to be more on the actors themselves and not because it was requested of them. I havent really seen anyone request this before they did it.

So far that's been a controversy that's hit relatively big things like the Simpsons or Family Guy. Dubbed Anime either isn't large enough to merit attention (beyond some series where the characters are or could be considered white), or for the moment, people are rational enough to realize it's a very small and cloistered group of the same people doing just about everything for small companies and to try and force that would destroy the concept.

And of course, this is mostly about black characters which anime is not full of. Asians don't get the same concern, unless Alex Borstein said she won't voice Tricia Takanawa anymore and I didn't hear about it.

The controversy around Scarlett Johansson playing the lead in the 2017 Ghost in the Shell live-action movie is related to this discussion, even though the character in that case is a little more nuanced. Someone might argue that it was different because it was a live-action portrayal instead of a voice portrayal so the representation is different. Or someone might argue that there's more Asian actresses in Hollywood who could've played the character than there are Asian voice actresses in the very, very small voice-acting community.

I'm not getting into whether that controversy was stupid or correct, or whether the discussion in voice-acting is stupid or correct either. But it's an analogue on the topic.

Or that the point of the series being we aren't these multi colored meat sacks and the Major isn't any of them necessarily and it should make us think a little bit on why some people are so dominantly if not solely defined by their pigment.

Yeah that's one of the nuances I think people who didn't know anything about the series were ignoring.
