Board 8 > So, how is Naruto?

One of the mainstream series Ive never gotten around to. I love Dragon Ball so its not like every anime I watch has to be deep. Is it worth getting into? Whats the distinction between Naruto and Naruto Shippuden? Is Boruto any good?

There are legitimately great parts of Naruto early on and around the middle.

It is probably one of the most definitive bed shitters on the market towards the end, though.

Shippuden is just the name for the anime post timeskip, to rebrand.

Im rewatching Naruto Kai right now, and there are still some moments of legitimately GOAT territory, but there is also a surprising amount of laugh out loud, wow this is godawful animation during unimportant parts that I didnt remember.

Even with the Kai edit Naruto + Shippuden is really long, so its hard to say if its worth it without the nostalgia? Maybe if you want to know about certain notoriously badass characters

Admittedly Naruto is my biggest guilty pleasure. I secretly love all the stupid bullshit at the end, it's just dumb fun.

The first half is legit good though it often exemplifies my biggest issue with shounen anime, there are so many flashbacks it hurts

Ehh Im just looking for something new. Any kind of anime. I never watched Attack on Titan after season 1, but I dont think Im in the mood for something that is so depressing.

I don't know what shounen you've seen, but you should absolutely prioritize Hunter x Hunter (2011} over it if you have not already. It is a magnitude better.

The show is pretty basic early on, it lives on moments. Whole bunch of nothin happens then something cool happens and that hooks you long enough for the next moment to happen

I think its the opposite tbh. The original series is extremely standard Shonen, with Shippuden it finds its own personality

If you'd be interested in something that just started to watch weekly, Tower of God started this season and has been incredible so far, some very heavy HxH vibes. Having read ahead in the manhwa it's gonna stay that way, too.

For now it's only gonna reach episode 13, but it's been very well received and popular so that's undoubtedly gonna change. There's enough content so far in the manhwa for well over 200 episodes.

Watch the original series then read the manga. Besides the final battle seeming interminable it never gets car crash bad, but does go downhill.

The Shippuden anime on the other hand, is a car crash. Except slowed down 1000x.

Oh yeah come to think of it I never even watched Shippuden, just read the manga, played the Ninja Storm games (which are better than the anime) and watched some of the fights that were expertly animated but those are few and far between.

This is a problem with long shows, it has tons of great moments but after you get invested into it a lot you want to see it to the end and...the end is not good
Everything before the timeskip is great (don't listen to those "Naruto sucked after the Chuunin exam wahhhhhhhhhh" idiots) But Shippuden is a mess
The original anime has some filler arcs but you can easily skip them
In Shippuden the fillers are..part of the show, and good luck skipping them. There is also a huge drop in quality after a certain part (Pain fight) and the series never recovered after that

Honestly, just watch the original, skip the filler episodes, then decide if you want to continue

Pain fight is one of the best parts of the entire series, so I guess technically the quality drops from the peak, but as someone who JUST re-watched original Narutoexcept for the Chuunin examits so boring compared to Shippuden.

I read the manga and have no regrets, aside from the bad scanlation of post-timeskip. I really like the comedic faces the author draws, and his awkward personal anecdotes in the tankobon.

The adapted arcs in the original are all very good imo. The problem in the original series (for this I am counting Shippuden as a different show even though it's technically the same if you go on the manga), is that there is all that filler and the filler is so bad. I can't in good faith ignore the filler and be like it's still good. Without the filler it's probably an 8 or a 9 imo, but with it it's like a 4 or a 5. (although there is one notable great filler episode where they try to find out what's under Kakashi's mask).

I actually dropped Shippuden but finished the manga. Some of the stuff gets kind of eh later on.

I dropped it around episode 70 or so

At that point it had only adopted one of the manga arcs and that only lasted 5 episodes or so. I still read the boruto manga every month though.

Put me in for Part 1 is good, but early to mid Part 2 is the peak. And then it sucks even though I'm actually kinda good with the tail end of it.

I actually like to judge anime by watching all the episodes (or as many until I drop the show).

Naruto feels like a show that had a ton of potential if it stayed grounded to the original idea.

When they began to make it some bullshit doomsday nonsense is when it started to lose its appeal. The best parts of Naruto is when it focuses on teams of ninjas trying to help people, and ninjas growing with their powers and abilities. When it's at its worst is when it focuses on these ridiculously OP characters and fox power ups and stupid shit like that.

If they kept it reigned in I feel like it would have been a much better series.

I quit watching Naruto after I watched an entire episode with Orichimaru fighting the wood powers ninja guy and the subber said at the start of the episode "This episode only has 13 lines of dialogue. lol" How does this happen?

The beginning of Naruto (the first serie) is the best, you can see if you continue afterwards.
However, you should stop at around 100 episodes before the end , because it will be an endless stream of bad fillers that will sap any interest you might have in the serie.

you people know you can just skip the fillers right

Unless youre all caught up and starved for content, watching the filler for any shonen is a really bad idea.

Yes I would honestly recommend just playing through the Ninja Storm games. They adapt the story well enough and in a lot of cases the fight scenes in the games are done way better than the anime where most of the time they couldn't even bother.

Note that I'm mainly talking about Shippuden. You should still watch part 1 of Naruto normally.
