Maybe I'm being naive but I really struggle to see how post-2008 type austerity measures and rhetoric play in the months/years after this is all dealt with.

The longer things are shut down, the longer it will take to get back to normal. Well get there eventually.

Nope

Nothing will change. Republicans are still pushing anti science and anti healthcare stances while there is a literal global pandemic

The US is openly ignoring the constitution and no one cares

Lots of people will whine on twitter but they wont vote or do anything practical

Have you seen McConnel's proposal?

He shot down the one that gave people healthcare and supported.

Then the one he came up with gives the unemployed (in 2018) nothing, gives poor people very little, Gives wealthy people $1,000 and gives large corporations enormous no strings attached bailouts.

Democrats caved as always
GOP got their way as always

It's not the socialist paradise you think it is. It's same old same old austerity measures during a pandemic

It will be a similar impact as 9/11. It wont stop capitalism, but it will change some stuff. More protectionism, more robust supply chains. Their will be a move to stop China having a monopoly on industries.

I'm glad someone else said it because 9/11 brought us the Patriot Act to thunderous applause

And right now the US government is rolling back protections on unwarranted search and sezuire + removing the right to free association and everyone is applauding again because they are scared

Which is super duper disturbing to me. This is not okay and I wish people would wake up.

It being legal to arrest people who protest the government and it being legal to search people and their homes for no reason has nothing to do with Corona, it's facism through the backdoor. Keep an eye on it.

Yep this had been making me think a lot about things.

Why is anything changing? Why should we close down peoples livelihood? Why are people ok with this? Why social distance? Why close anything at all? GIVE ME LIBERTY OR GIVE ME DEATH!

It's sad really that people would rather be scared and stop living. I'd rather be dead then in lockdown quarantine.

If you want to die, that's your choice.

Potentially killing others by infecting them shouldn't be permitted though.

Yes, itll get worse.

After this is over you will see a focused effort by lobbyists from corporations of all kind to paint the response as hysteria and overreaction. The only lesson this country will take from this is saving lives is not worth losing money.

Every Republican will adopt this stance and the next time this happens no red state will do jack shit.

The crisis is the best thing the government could hope for, they can use it to disfranchise groups they don't like and the poor, they can use it as an excuse to pass unpopular corporate helping laws under the guise of protection and safety, that EARN IT act is as good as passed now.

Its important to see what they try and sneak by while the media has our attention distracted with this virus. Already I've seen a few power-mongers taking steps to bring in martial law in their states.

Anytime anyone goes out sick they could "potentially" be killing people.

More people die everyday from car accidents than this "really really bad flu". Should we ban driving?

It is not illegal to be sick, it is your choice if you are scared and want to willingly put yourself under house arrest.

I think everyone is being very selfish right now and taking their liberties and freedoms for granted. Banning living for fear of death is not what freedoms were built on.
