Now before I begin, I DO keep expired credit cards in my wallet. I have two capital one cards with a personal image on them I like to show people and the super fancy heavy metal card I had at one point in time that is no longer active. I have never tried to pay with any of these cards when their expiration hit because I keep them in the same slots in my wallet and aren't an idiot.

But sometimes, when waiting on somebody as a cashier they will use a card, it will come up expired, so they pull out the exact same generic gray Discover card or something once they realize their mistake. Unless it has sentimental value or something, what is the point in keeping it in the wallet? Moreover, why don't you place it in a spot you wouldn't reach for?

I forget to cut mine up

Its a common reason when a card comes up declined because it is expired they will put out the newer dated but identical looking card.

a card being declined because it is expired doesnt happen terribly often, but i've seen it more than once or twice.

I doubt this is a common occurrence I never keep an expired credit card in my wallet, though I do forget to cut them up sometimes and they languish in a drawer somewhere.

I guess it helps that I have a very thin wallet though that can only hold like 4 cards+drivers license makes you analyze everything in the wallet.

this has happened enough to where ive seen it more than a handful of times but it isnt like an everyday occurrence.

Maybe to trick a thief. For me, I take mine out, but not immediately. Normally, its because when I get my mail, Im usually busy. So, Ill just take the mail with me. When I open it and see a card, I put the new card in my wallet. But I dont want to lose the old card. So, I plan on keeping it until I can dispose of it properly. The just forget multiple times... Or get super busy...
