All the little graphical touches. The way the environment lended itself naturally to stage gimmicks. The freedom of exploration that didnt inhibit a fun, linear obstacle course. The way the boss fights utilized the level theme. The stage transition with Flying Battery.

Its the perfect level.

Rush-style gameplay is fun, but the level designs have way too much unused space compared to the originals. OG Mushroom Hill will reward you for stopping at just about any point in the level to look around. Modern Mushroom Hill is a pretty barebones attraction that only really tests your twitch reflexes. >_>

Mushroom Hill is the best Zone 1, for sure. I would give the slight edge to Lava Reef though.

Sonic 2 is legit my favorite game overall. Only thing that could make it better would be if Death Egg was a full zone. And a fully-realized Hidden Palace would make it perfect.

Yaaaassss! When you get blown into the autumn during act 2, and then it becomes like, dreary green in the final stretch. It was such a simple, but effective way of giving each act its own identity.

I really loved how Sonic Mania did the same thing with Press Garden.

the original flying battery sucked, with its slow-paced crusher segments, weird moving snake orb things, repeated bombing segments, long elevators, mesh tubes with worse collision than in sonic 2, and the most boring cinematic sequence in the entire game
the mania version did a lot to improve over it, even if it still has some pacing issues
