In a box office achievement fit for royalty, Disneys Frozen 2 is officially the highest-grossing animated movie in history.

The sequel has generated $1.325 billion at the global box office, pushing past Frozen ($1.281 million) and Incredibles 2 ($1.243 million) to secure the top spot. Though Jon Favreaus remake of The Lion King is entirely computer generated and earned $1.65 billion in 2019, Disney considers it a live-action reboot rather than an animated flick. Either way, the benchmark only solidifies Disneys place as the preeminent force on all things animation the studio is now responsible for the top three biggest cartooned movie of all time.

Unsurprising but it also seemed like less of a cultural phenomenon as the first.

It isn't because Lion King(2019) exists(not that Lion King 2019 comes even close to deserving the crown)

Fuck what Disney says. Its objectively not Live Action.

They pushed it to get a nom for best animated picture iirc. So dunno what that's all about.

Disney got the reality stone.

No surprise, when I saw it my theater was fucking packed and it ended up being better than the first. I suspect Disney is gonna go for the trilogy and start production of a Frozen 3 soon.

What's the mindset behind treating the Lion King remake as live action? Is it about live action movies being more respected than animated ones? Disney dominates Hollywood and the box office so I don't see why they'd care about any sort of prestige.

The real question is live action Frozen when

eh i thought frozen 1 and frozen 2 both looked overrated. the beauty and the beasts and the aladdins from way back might have been better animated movies.

The Elsa/Anna lesbian theme probably didn't hurt it any.

huh, I wasn't interested in it and didn't see it, so maybe I'm just out of the loop, but I feel like I'm not seeing nearly as much marketing or chatter about this one compared to the first. I'd just kinda assumed it would quietly make a a good chunk of money but didn't realize it was doing so well.

Good on it. It doesnt have a crutch song like Let It Go (which it actually makes fun of a little in this one) and its one of those sequels that doesnt need to exist, but does a great job at fleshing out the world and characters in the process anyway.

Im not sure what direction a Frozen 3 would go in, since it ended pretty conclusively, but Id be glad to see that one too.

I guess Final Fantasy the Spirits Within was live action now. Shit it's more realistic than the Lion King despite being about alien ghosts.

Id say overall the songs in Frozen 2 are better, but yea no song as popular as Let it Go. My favorite was Into the Unknown.

Im guessing that one was supposed to be the movies version of Let It Go but it doesnt really portray itself as that; its just a really good song.

Ehh, I thought Frozen 2 was Ok for a weekend movie. I am glad kids like it and it is doing well. But for adults, it was very predictable and there was not really any scene that stood out. On second thought, was the Kristoff musical number supposed to be extra funny? I did enjoy that one as being like a parody of bad YouTube amateur vids.

Mostly a branding thing, since these remakes have always been live action they just want to keep them connected or whatever.
