I have seen the trailers for it a couple of times now and every time I do I have this really weird sensation as if I'm in a subconscious dream state.

So can you maybe explain it better than the trailer does?

Because it looks like a comedy based on Nazis, and the trailers call it "satire" but there doesn't seem to be much satire in it, just jokes about what Nazis did.

People thought Springtime for Hitler was tasteless, but this is getting rave reviews?

Hmm...

I am curious to see it but I'm failing to see how it's a "deep, genius movie" full of "satire" just based on the trailer.

Because it looks like a comedy based on Nazis, and the trailers call it "satire" but there doesn't seem to be much satire in it, just jokes about what Nazis did.

It's about a kid who attends a junior SS camp and lives in a Nazi occupied town and he's obsessed with the ideology and stuff. This clashes with the ideology of his mother (Scarlet Johannson) who just wants the war to end and for Germany to be peaceful again.

Really early on in the movie JoJo the main character hurts himself at the camp so he gets taken out of it and have to spend more time at home and that's when he discovers that His mom is hiding a Jewish girl

Between that and his mother's belief he starts to question himself and the whole thing presented is like a really off beat Wes Anderson film kind of. It's pretty comedic for most of it, but start dipping into more serious territory near the end.
It takes the piss out of the Nazis and the things they did, but it's less about that and more about this kid slowly realizing the flaws in this ideology he practically worshipped.

Oh so that does sound like more... mature/serious than the scenes of burning books and shit >_> Thanks.

I was actually a bit surprised when I saw it. Because of the trailers I've seen, it made it seem like the whole movie was going to take place at the camp. Nah, that's just, like, the first 15-20 minutes of it. And the whole thing with the girl took me by surprise.

It kind of reminded me of that movie Life is Beautiful.

I kept having it pop up while watching jojo videos on my Adblock-less tablet so they probably knew what they were doing, market-wise.

It definitely is. It has just the right amount of humor too. I do think the trailers gave this idea that Waititi's role would be bigger than it actually is. And a lot of the humor does come from his character of course.

But I highly recommend it. It was great.

I was about to watch the movie yesterday (even bought a ticket), but I accidently bought one for the wrong time.

I bought two tickets, one of Parasite and one for Jojo Rabbit, and I was supposed to see JR after Parasite, but I somehow bought one for a showing that was halfway done after Parasite had ended rather than the one that started about an hour later.

Also I think Thomasin McKenzie will be nominated for an Oscar in the near future. I see her becoming a popular actress.

She has a presence. Everyone in the movie gave an ace performance, but she's a stand-out.

Imagine being that age and holding your own in a scene with Scar-flipping-Jo.

I was pleasantly surprised to learn she was going to be in Jojo Rabbit. I saw her in Leave No Trace last year. Great film, and very impressive performance from her of course.

Yeah after watching Jojo's Nazi Adventure I made sure to look up what she was in and a lot of what I read lauded her Leave No Trace performance.

yeah but it pisses me off they portray nazis in an almost acceptable way, like "look lol, they're quirky and clumsy and cringe worthy like the rest of us, lol". It's normalizing them. They were blood thirsty monsters, there was nothing quirky or funny about them.

To me, it was less that they were normalizing them and more that this is Waititi's way of mocking them, while also trying to make genuine characters out of them.
Besides, they get theirs by the end when they lose the war and the American soldiers comes in and starts picking them off.

I like how the movie portrayed that whole sequence as dour and rough (war after all), but afterwards when things go back to normal, it's realized that it was for the best.
