Are there any actual statistics on this alt-right/neo-nazi/supremacist conversion shit? Because I feel like this is all probably a fearmongering nothingburger that has probably affected hundreds of people at most. With the way they've been churning this shit, you'd think we have ten million neo-nazis ready to try to overthrow the government.

Pointless deflection. Supremacist ideologies spreading is not a good thing, but people need to show actual statistics if they want to claim there is some horribly infectious Gamer/incel/YouTube radicalization process. They are cockroaches, but I dont believe they are similarly numerous.

I want to see something that shows any indication this is more then 10 easily influenced morons. Declaring emergencies over the actions of a few helps nothing. We need proportional responses to problems. This is similar to when YouTube decides to send out a tactical nuke every time there is the slightest advertiser issue. Are there issues to fix? Yes. Should literal millions be affected by the actions of a small few? No. Its the same as the OK symbol. Is some minority using it in a negative manner? Yes. Should they be called out in it? Yes. Should we assume every usage of it is nazi signaling? No.

who declared an emergency?

this is a guy making videos about them on youtube. is that a disproportional resposnse?

a significant reason why the ideology is spreading is that they're good at broadcasting

you're making up that scenario. no one has ever said that every instance of it is nazi signalling. people have said that it is a symbol of white supremacy, which is true

This is about these supposed radicalized internet dwellers, not the already existent ones. There unfortunately will always be some fringe hate groups. They should not be ignored, but their presence should also not be overly inflated to bring about mass fearmongering.

Ever since the original "oops I accidentally white supremacist" article or video, this has been a pervasive talking point, fueled also by the Gamer and incel fearmongering. That video is just one of many. There are certainly real people falling into this cult, but I refuse to believe it is anything more than the "average easily swayed moron" quota of people without some numbers. These people should be given the help and support needed

The outrage and articles about every time someone uses the symbol disagrees with that. Your emphasis on the word "is" disagrees with that.

The video talks about the gradual descent into conservative YouTube that may occur, starting on one level that espouses a generally mild belief and continuously going down the chain where the previous belief is naive and stupid but the current belief is the true story, until they're fully accustomed to the movement's worst aspects. The idea being that by desensitising the potential userbase of the alt-right, before making an incremental step forward and desensitising them to that new issue, the alt-right can lead otherwise reasonable people down a shitty path.

The video also makes a point of mentioning the fact that any time, a generally young, malleable recruit might step away from the recruitment process for any number of reasons, like being introduced to a full-crazy concept before the rhetoric has had a chance to wear them down.

Yeah, it's crazy.

I recall when I heard 45's first campaign speech. He goes like "unfair trade", I think to myself "true!!". He goes like "we need to better compete with China", I think to myself "true!!". Then he goes like "mexicans are rapists", that's the moment I knew he was a nutjob.

Like the video said, they take legitimate issues (such as globalization, outsourcing, etc) and then they offer an evil version of the solution (e.g. blame the jewish, become racist, etc).

There's an incredibly interesting point of the video that discusses the general process of white supremacist groups, where they grow their ranks and strike out with an act of violence that is intended to embolden the remaining members of the community - but the ideology is so tainted by this action in the public eye that the group is destined to infight and break up rather than galvanise and mobilise. The difference between white supremacist groups of old and the alt-right being that older groups had to oragnise, and at the end of the day members of these organisations were somewhat accountable for the actions committed.

The video brings up the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville. By all means, the counter-protester losing her life and the controversy over the marchers chanting "blood and sand"and anti-semetic slogans should have been one of those defining moments that condemned the alt-right to the same empty future that any "legitimate" conservative reactionary movement achieves. But because the relative anonymity of the internet allowed the alt-right to cut ties with controversial figures and put stock in up-and-coming talent to court similar attention, essentially changing their image, the group has been able to de-escalate and bide their time.

Their "power level" was revealed too early, and because the alt-right has no defining figurehead, the movement as a whole could survive an event that would otherwise destabilise or delegitimise a full-on hate group.

Asking for how many people are being swayed into a cult-like mentality is "oddly specific"? Talking about the reasons behind radicalization in general and specific cases of radicalization are good. What's not good is embellishing the rate of radicalization or acting like a specific method of radicalization is more enticing than reality.
