I only played Crash 3 when I was young, so I got the Crash trilogy for the Switch to play the other 2. That level is just dreadful and making me want to stop playing. I got 4 game overs on that level already, and it's just straight up awful.

This. You might want to play the games in reverse order. Once you start going for the Crash 1 deathless gems and the relics it gets pretty gruelling.

That's easily my least favorite stage. I enjoyed pretty much every stage after, though, with the exception of some frustrating levels to get the gems for (like the second blackout stage, for example).

Isn't the story going to get confusing? I had the JP version of Crash 3 so I didn't understand the story when I first played it, but I was hoping to keep up with the story this time.

Also, I'm looking to just beat the story, fuck all that gem nonsense.

Well, then you're in luck. Collecting the gems in Crash 1 gives you the non-canon ending of the game. You just need to clear all levels and beat Cortex to see the true ending.
