I only played a little bit of 2k5 way back on OG Xbox, and I remember sucking at that game.
I suck at this game pretty bad too.
How am I supposed to know when to release the shoot button for a basket? I release when the bar is full but always says late. wtf
I'm confused by the defensive options too.
I ordered NBA 2k1 on Dreamcast recently so I think that game will be a better start to Basketball games.

Are you using square (or X) or the shot stick to shoot?

Who are you shooting with? Your myplayer or are you playing with a team?

Using square.
I'm playing with the Raptors and I try to use Kawhi or Vanvleet to shoot, especially on the 3s.

For me personally, I switch the way you shoot to the shot stick, which means you use the right stick to shoot (I think you can still use square, but I rarely ever do.) When you shoot this way, you pull back the stick and release right before they get to the top of their shot. Everybodys shot is different, so it is different for every player. Its probably about half a second that you are holding the button or flicking the stick. It is not a long time. A quick press and release will be too early. It needs to be pushed (or pulled down if youre using the stick) and then released.

2k has a huge learning curve, but once you get it its much easier. Just takes practice. Myplayer is pretty perfect for this because your player starts out so shitty, then as you build stats your player gets better and so do you.

I usually use square for shooting but some people say right stick is better.

Try both and see which one you prefer.

I feel like the bar sometimes continues briefly after you let go but that could be in my head. Just practice and you'll get the hang of it. My player is also good because, at least in 2k18, you could do training drills that help.
