He does want to pilot the robot, and he does a pretty bang up job most of the time, but the point of the show is that the adults have thrust this massive, military-esque responsibility onto the shoulders of children. They are not going to be mature about it most of the time

This. And he calls him here out of the blue with no explanation, and then totally ignores his shitty parenting to tell him to risk is life piloting a damn robot. In my rewrite, he flips his dad off and moonwalks backwards out of NERV to go live his life, and tells anyone who tries to guilt him into working with Gendo to eat shit.

That ain't even the real trauma, though it was pretty hard to watch. It all begins with her relationship with her mom, and how it ended. Nerv like only exists to harness the trauma and angst of it's staff and it's charges to fight giant monsters.
