tbh, given the US's tendency towards incumbency, Trump will likely win the popular vote. Keep in mind that GWB lost the popular vote in 2000 yet won it in 2004. And honestly, the economy and employment numbers have been better under Trump. For example, even with all of this talk about stocks taking a hit, the Dow-Jones average today is *still* up by more than 25% since before Trump took office.

I'll screenshot this topic so we can compare.

You: -One by one, Dem candidates say / do something stupid until they become "unelectable"
Me: Joe Biden does something stupid until he becomes "unelectable", every other lobbied candidate is already unelectable. (He's basically tied with Bernie at this point, and every time he runs he can't help but make people hate him and tank in poll numbers.)

You: Dem political commentators constantly arguing over who's too liberal and who's not liberal enough
Me: The entire news media scrambles to find a corporate candidate who can actually stand a chance.

You: Trump says "I could light a puppy on fire and people would still vote for me"
Me: He already did this, not fair.

-Dem candidates get whittled down to Bernie and Biden, the DNC picks Biden (obviously)
I really hope they don't have that much power.

-Bernie supporters go nuts, refuse to vote for Biden, yada yada yada
-Biden beats Trump in popular vote but Trump wins electoral votes
-Dems blame moderates who don't vote for their loss
-4 more years of stupidity

I refuse to vote for someone just because they have a D on their head, because I'm not a tribalist, and I care about consequences.

If Hillary was a liberal she wouldn't have voted for every war. If Biden was a liberal he wouldn't have voted for every war. They wouldn't vote in favor of their pharmaceutical, insurance, and military contractor donors over popular opinion if they were any kind of "Democrat" I'd care about. They're like walking popups spouting that I've won the lottery. They're like hot girls on Tinder. Odds of them working out for me? About 0%. They're better than Trump because they're not slamming on the accelerator in reverse, but just parking the car, and eating a burrito while the world burns down.

It's actually looking pretty good though, because the best they can do is Biden, and Bernie actually polls well against Trump. Sanders actually polls well in rust belt states where unemployment is a serious problem, because he campaigned in those states. Hillary campaigned for the outsourcing that screwed them over to begin with, while Trump railed NAFTA. That's a huge reason why Hillary lost. Bernie is anti-outsourcing, and he actually means it, which makes him more appealing than the dice roll that was Trump, that's what makes Bernie poll well when coal miners are still screwed over in 2019.

GWB also had an ongoing war that he could use to spook people with ("Are you crazy, don't change leadership in the middle of a war!") that was still popular at the time, plus his poll numbers actually went up after his election, as opposed to Trump's which have done nothing but gone down since then.

And honestly, the economy and employment numbers have been better under Trump.

Which makes it all the more impressive that his poll numbers are underwater. Any politician over the last 50 years would kill to have Trump's position - no major conflicts, soaring economy - yet Trump can't seem to translate that to more than a 45% approval rating at best.

He was and remains a historically weak candidate, perhaps even moreso now because all the establishment Republican voters who held their nose and voted for him because, "Well, he's terrible, but all the sensible Republicans in Congress will put a leash on him," can now see that those Congressional Republicans all misplaced their spines somewhere and won't do a damn thing to stand up to him. Trump has done nothing to win over anyone outside his base and even opposition groups that eyed him with cautious optimism (remember when he was supposed to be the first pro-LGBTQ Republican president?) have been left bitterly disappointed.

Lacking any major policy victories, the economy is really the only thing Trump has going for him at this point. And if *that* tanks in the next year, get ready to watch his poll numbers fall off a cliff.
