The bullet hit an onlooker, Thomas Reddington, 24, in his left leg. He was not seriously injured.

How can getting a bullet in the leg not be a serious injury?

Honestly I'm cool with this. He's on probation and he had to pay for the victim's court and medical fees. He hadn't been drinking according to the case, but you have to be a special kind of stupid to pull that shit off.

I am curious about his probation though. I think he should have to retake a gun safety course before he is able to use it in work.

Dude deserves jail time, when he picked up the gun he was not paying attention to where the trigger was, not being drunk it means he should have been paying a lot more attention to how he retrieved his dropped gun.

What if instead of a minor injury to someones leg he killed someone ?, this guy was sober and acting this stupid, remove your weapon before dancing or trying some backflip bullshit.

Jail time is pretty pointless though. He would have probably only done 6 months. Now if it was something like attempted murder. Then yes obviously. People are just hating because he's a 'cop' and got off scott free. I personally don't care much for cops either. But I think this was fair.

If a person that works at dollar general would have done jail time for the same thing then it really is something people should be upset about. Gun negligence and irresponsibility should never be tolerated.

Being irresponsible with a gun is something that should always be taken seriously no matter who you are. Gun safety is not a game and if your being unsafe you deserve punishment.

It went off when he picked it up. The striker in a Glock is blocked until the trigger is pulled. Other than a serious malfunction or defective part, the gun only goes bang when you pull the trigger.

Also, cops wonder why people don't like them. Cases like this show there's two sets of rules. Imagine if a civilian legally carrying did this. "Oh, well, since it was an accident, we'll just give you unsupervised probation. Try not to shoot people in the leg, okay?"

would a civilian picking their legally owned gun off the floor and having it accidentally discharge (and have it hit someone), go to jail? this should be the starting point for this conversation.

In reality this rarely happens. There are plenty of cases of gun negligence that result in pretty much nothing happening to the person that shot someone on accident. It's treated similar to a traffic accident.

Is that right? Probably, not but that's how things are.
