Stardew Valley was supposed to release WITH multiplayer, and we only just now got it a few months ago.
It was even one of the selling points in most of the trailers he released.

He even admitted that he was going to call it "done" and stop working on it entirely. But ended up feeling guilty for not making good on his promises.

Should we hold indie devs to higher standards than what we do?
It's like he got all that instant cash from stardew and so he just said "fuck it" until his conscious took over.

No, Stardew is great and he did add multiplayer. Also, afaik, there's supposed to be a new patch coming up for Stardew and he is supposed to also have a new project in the works. Think he's got some helpers now too, so that's even better.

Holy shit the sense of entitlement in this topic.

It's too easy to underestimate the amount of work you'll have to do for a single feature, indie developers especially.

If you don't design your entire game around multiplayer from the start, you actually have to redo a third of the entire code.

It wasn't like he was lazy one afternoon and decided not to add multiplayer in an hour or two.

I don't remember the game being sold on multiplayer coming later.

Honestly, it is a great game as it was released and pretty amazing what he accomplished pretty much working on the game by himself.

This nearly 6 year old video shows an early build of the game with multiple farmers playing together.

To argue that it wasn't already being coded is simply wrong.
It was one of the selling points from very early on.

I never claimed that was the case. I just claimed that he didn't keep good on his promise of having multiplayer as an option from the start. He put off multiplayer for quite a good amount of time after the game was released, and even started working on an entirely different project in the meantime.

It probably would have never been implemented in the first place had he not got so many complaints about it not being present.

It was a $20 game that I've put more hours into than any other game in my Switch aside from Zelda. The Harvest Moon similarity is what sold me, not the multiplayer.

SV is written with C# and Mono. As it turns out, I'm also using c# and Mono. How a new guy will attempt to do multiplayer is spaghettification, just "make it work".

Working with spaghettified code is like wiring your house with extension cords all over the place. Sometimes you just have to throw it all away and redo it. If you don't know how to format your code properly, your development will grind to a halt as you make it far too complicated to keep track of.

It's likely that that multiplayer build "just worked", but wasn't good to build anything off of. Mono does attract a lot of new guys who don't want to screw with OpenGL and just want to draw a sprite to a screen ASAP.

The fact that coop was being worked on so early and boasted so much makes me imagine nearly all of that coop code was scrapped.

I literally just said in the message that you quoted that I loved the game. It very much is a great game. And I'm not even complaining that it took two years to do. I'm complaining that he literally dropped it in favor of working on a completely different project. Despite pushing it as a feature that would be available at launch. So in essence, it didn't "take 2 years" it just took him 2 years to get around to it.

Again, I question your ability to comprehend what you're reading. You keep making it out like I'm painting this guy as the Hitler of indie game developers when I merely called him an asshole for not keeping his word.
