Marvel Studios is fast-tracking Shang-Chi to be its first superhero movie tentpole franchise with an Asian protagonist. The studio has set Chinese-American scribe Dave Callaham to write the screenplay, and Deadline hears Marvel is already looking at a number of Asian and Asian-American directors who want to do something as potentially monumental as was accomplished in Marvels first viable Best Picture candidate, Black Panther. That film tied into African and African American cultures and the sensibilities of its nearly all-black cast, with a black director in Ryan Coogler and writer in Joe Robert Cole. The goal here is to do a similar thing: introduce a new hero who blends Asian and Asian American themes, crafted by Asian and Asian American filmmakers.

I remember when I first learned about Luke Cage many years ago. I was with some friends. And we had a conversation.

Me: "Who's that?"
Friend: "That's Luke Cage."
Me: "I mean I can see that, but what's his super power?"
Friend: "His super power is that he's black."

Granted I have never read a Marvel comic at all, any have only gotten my Marvel info from the 90's X-Men cartoons and videos games, The 90's Spider-Man cartoon, and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance games, I consider myself well-versed enough in Marvel lore, and I have no idea who this Shang-Chi is. They couldn't do a Lady Deathstrike or Sunfire movie? Or a Big Hero 6 sequel?

Shang Chi was popular in the 70's during the kung fu craze. he's like Iron Fist except actually asian. he's one of Iron Fist's friends

Can't really say I can relate to the "movie with an asian hero needs an asian director and an asian writer" logic. For example, the director that made the Raid is white. Would I rather have him or some random asian director that has never made a good action movie? Hmm. Tough choice. Anyway, Shang-Chi is badass and all but can't really say I've ever really been a huge fan. If the movie looks good I'll see it but can't say I'm hyped.

i really dont know how asian people do it sometimes. their mass media representations are either martial artists or long duk dong, and then any time there is some kind of an interesting story you could tell with asian people it gets whitewashed lol

So another film people will pretend is somehow more than just superhero trash because of the ethnicity of the people involved. I'm very anti-racist but Black Panther was awful, I can see how it could be seen as culturally important but as a film it was bad and no better than something like the second Thor movie.

I thought I'd wrote a review on letterboxd about it but I hadn't, so here's me several months ago rating it poorly https://letterboxd.com/pmouse/film/black-panther-2018/activity/ This is not some troll thing, I just don't like it. Also it's kind of fucked up to have the CIA kind of being good guys in a film supposedly about promoting black and african heritage.

Karma shaming is pretty shitty and just a way of attacking people and attempting to discredit legitimate opinions.

Honestly it has a chance at being great as long as its not rushed.
