Japan cybersecurity minister who doesnt use computers says hes also not familiar with cybersecurity

Yoshitaka Sakurada, the minister for cybersecurity who recently confessed that he does not use computers, has now told a Diet committee that he is not very familiar with cybersecurity issues.

At Thursdays meeting of the Lower House Cabinet Committee, Sakurada who also serves as minister for the 2020 Tokyo Games faced his first question-and-answer session on a bill to revise the Basic Act on Cybersecurity.

I myself am not that familiar with cybersecurity matters, he told the committee.

My biggest job (as Cabinet minister) is to read out written replies (prepared by bureaucrats) without making any mistakes, he said.

During the meeting, however, there were times when Sakurada failed to read such documents correctly. He also misunderstood questions from lawmakers and made some inappropriate answers.

He faced criticism from an opposition lawmaker, saying that he could cause losses to Japans economy.

In reply, Sakurada said, Im here because a Cabinet minister is needed.

Also at Thursdays meeting, Sakurada expanded on his use of technological devices.

I use a smartphone many times a day because its very useful, said Sakurada, who took up his current post in a Cabinet reshuffle in early October. Ive never felt any inconvenience from not being able to type by myself.

At a meeting of the same committee on Nov. 14, Sakurada, 68, said, I dont use a personal computer drawing shock from the opposition camp and capturing worldwide media attention.

Its incredible that a person who has never used a computer is in charge of cybersecurity policies, an opposition lawmaker said at the time.

The amendment to the cybersecurity law was approved by a majority vote with support mainly from the Liberal Democratic Party-led ruling bloc.

The bill calls for, among other things, establishing a council to facilitate information-sharing between the public and private sectors, in a bid to strengthen measures against possible cyberattacks ahead of the Olympics and Paralympics.

I wonder if this is a consequence of Japan's aging population. Not enough younger people to fill positions for relatively new fields where their contributions would be most helpful.

great point.

Makes sense.

I think the nation's shortcomings are a result of how they value certain people, and age groups within their society.

There was a surprising amount of young people in Japan when I went a month ago. And like 90% of the dudes wore suits lol. And just for fun, differences I noticed between the people in Japan and Hawaii :D

- Japanese are nowhere near as obese (to the surprise of no one) as the locals here
- Japanese are nowhere near as loud. No random "JEEEEEEHEEEEEE!!!!" followed by buffoonish laughter on the street (residents of Hawaii, you should know this all too well), people Face Timing while walking down the sidewalk or on public transit, and no extraordinarily loud conversations in general.
- People pay attention where they're going because in Japan it's generally frowned upon to do things while walking, such as eating or drinking.
- Tons of Japanese people wear those little dust masks, and even more wear business suits. In general they're much better dressed, even those not in suits. Not once did I see a non-hobo in ratty clothes or even slippers.
- Speaking of hobos: I only saw 2 in my week there, and one of them was actually putting a can into a recycling bin lol. Compared to Hawaii where we have 5 hobos per block making a mess by digging through the trash for recyclables.
- Sadly...The hot Japanese chicks there don't dress slutty :( Maybe it's because it was the end of October so it was getting colder, but I only saw a few mini skirts. At least the hot Asian chicks here wear booty shorts and such.
- And not directly related to actual people, but there was very little litter, despite the fact that there are very few public trash cans.

The things that stood out the most were the first two things though. People were quiet, well-mannered, and well...not fat as fuck <_<
