1Q84 was like this too. The book went on for an eternity before the story was cohesive enough to describe to a person whose never read it.

So 100 pages in and whats this about? Some guy is unemployed and is looking for his wifes lost cat. He also gets a dream blowjob from the sister of a psychic or something.

But its strangely compelling

Theme and metaphor are more important in that novel than the events actually happening on the page. That cat, for example, is both a literal cat and a figurative way for describing his relationship with his wife. His searching for his cat is a search for a literal cat, and a kind of journey to become someone who might convince the cat to come back home. Similarly, the assault his wife's brother is accused of committing isn't necessarily a physical assault, but it doesn't need to be to know that there is something deeply unpleasant surrounding him and his interactions with other people, despite his golden reputation.

Every thing Murakami writes leans heavily on the impression it makes on the reader and the narrative atmosphere it creates to hold the reader's attention. In many ways, plot is secondary to all of that.
