for what its worth the audience score is nearly the same as the first one (although with much fewer scores, but still several thousand)

FWIW, I enjoyed the first movie, and everything I've seen about this one leads me to believe I'll enjoy it too. But I'm also a fan of the lore and history of the Potterverse.

These movies aren't as easy to get into for casual fans, and Newt, either because that's how he's written or it's how Eddie's playing him, isn't that compelling of a character (the best characters in the first movie were Jacob, Queenie & Tina, IMO).

If anything she just lucked out with the main series, that play was fucking awful too.

Looking at a review in front of me it says there's too much going on and it's still setting up the however-many-more movies they have planned.

She only wrote the basic story. The script was someone else entirely.

We stretched what should have been one movie featuring Dumbledore as the main character, that explored his friendship with Grindlewald through his young adult life into middle age, and then made a bunch of cynical Hollywood decisions to get the movie some sex appeal and stretch it out into a trilogy. And now it's kind of creatively bankrupt isn't it?

Funny how that works.

It will. HP is like the fifth largest media franchise behind like Marvel and Star Wars. It'll more than make up what they spent making it.

Yeah, Rowling needs room to work her shit out long form in the books and then career screenwriters pare it down for the movies. She's out of her depth here.

Rowling needs a proven screen writer to help her to connect everything into a cohesive story.

Most of the reviews I've seen/read seem to suggest the entire movie is like one long plot dump without a lot of connecting narrative threads. So, as opposed to how each HP movie is grounded under it taking place in one year, with a mini story being told that is part of the larger narrative, this is just, "Shit is happening with no rhyme or reason to it all!"

Cursed Child was definitely pretty weak.

Then again, I only read the book and it would likely have been somewhat better as a novel rather than a script...

In theory, it's awesome. Harry's youngest son is kind of crushed by the overwhelming reputation of his father, who kind of carried heroic chosen one status in the wizarding world for most of his life, and who against all odds, lived up to his potential. His son is increasingly alienated by his inability to relate to his father, and pushes away his family only to momentarily fall under a bad influence.

In theory, it's a classic prodigal son plot that comments on the Harry Potter messianic archetype by contrasting it with his comparatively normal son. In practice, it's a meandering mess that never figures out where its actual heart lies, and tramples upon it's own lore for cheap drama.

Yes! That is very much the subtext, isn't it? And Harry doesn't know how to relate to someone with so different a perspective, when his life, difficult though it was, has largely rewarded his particular approach things. I also love that Scorpius is also a little atypically masculine, willfully rejecting a lot of the stereotypical performances in favor or something more true to himself. And of course, it's the tragedy in his own family that forces Scorpius to take ownership of his emotions and mental well-being at such a young age. Scorpius's sense of self is a foil to Albus Potter's insecurity.

There is clearly good stuff here, a lot of marvelous potential that just didn't pan out.

Yeah, I actually really liked Scorpius. The parts featuring Draco were also pretty good, because we got some insight into how he dealt with things re: Potter and Voldemort. Shame the plot was such a far-fetched mess it had to rely on time-turners.

I don't know how good it is as a play but as a book The Cursed Child is unreadable. Like someone who never read the original books looked up the Wikipedia summary for each character to determine their personality. I made it like a third of the way through before giving up, it's without a doubt the worst thing I've ever read outside of ironic fanfiction.
