Okay, at this point I'm pretty much convinced the left is trying to commit political suicide. There's no other logical explanation. They've had long enough now to realise that what they're doing isn't helping their cause; the only explanation is they want to lose support.

Of course, that maybe makes perfect sense if you believe they're just two sides of the same coin...

Here the part where he says that word for word:

NOAM CHOMSKY: I think it matters. Yes, we have every reason to be critical of the Democrats. These policies of the last generation, the neoliberal policies that have led to these conditions weve been talking about, the so-called New Democrats, the Clinton Democrats, have been right at the forefront. Say, deregulation of financial institutions, one of Clintons great achievements, which led directly to the financial crisis, along withone of the factors that led to ithis attack on the welfare program. Lots that we can blame them for.

In fact, I should say that some of the things that Trump has done, which arewhich merit praise, are bitterly attacked by the Democrats and by the Republican hawks, in particular, with regard to Korea. In April, last April, the two Koreas, North and South, issued a historic declaration, Panmunjom Declaration, in which they laid out for the first time fairly detailed plans and moves towards a reduction of tension, reconciliation, a reduction of weaponry, denuclearization. Very sensible, detailed plans. And they virtually pleaded with the outside world, meaning the United States, not to interfere. What they said is, the two Koreas will proceed with these plans on their own accordcrucially. In other words, let us do it. Trump, to his credit, has not interfered. The Singapore summit, for which he was lambasted, was one of his moreone of his very few admirable achievements. He not only did not intervene, but he even withdrew what he correctly described as provocative U.S.-South Korean military operations. Well, all of that should be supported. I dont know what his reasons were, maybe ridiculous reasons, but doesnt matter. These are moves that should be supported. Those are the things for which hes being bitterly attacked. So, its not an entirely, you know, sort of clear issue.

Nevertheless, overwhelmingly, the Republican Party is simply a major threat tonot only to the country, but to human survival. Ive said in the past that I think theyre the most dangerous organization in human history, on the issue of climate change alone, and I think thats worth repeating.

tl;dr, climate change = most dangerous

His argument is based on climate change and nuclear weapons. Climate change is a world problem, and even if the most progressive people possible took over all of the US they still would not necessarily be able to solve it. Nuclear war is not even close to as likely now as it has been at many points during the Cold War and again the US isn't the only country with nuclear weapons. I don't like Trump, I don't like Republicans, I don't like the US environmental or military policy, but I am not going to make alarmist statements that only appeal to other radicals to try to convince people.

Though really it's the weird cult of personality he has that assume because he made completely unrelated academic contributions in the past he is now an expert on modern politics.

We disagree a bit on this, but I see his point. Mine was about how he came out of the Singapore summit declaring a great victory, but there was next to nothing on paper. After all the bashing Trump did of the Iran deal, with all its verification procedures and access, to handle the summit the way he did was a joke.

But, certainly better than last year when it was all threats.

Are you sure? Im pretty certain nuclear war would mean practically immediate destruction of the human species, whereas climate change would be a more gradual demise. Additionally its very possible we can have technological breakthroughs in the future to reverse engineer the climate

Hes not assuming that, hes saying even if the US obliges with lowering emissions, it doesnt necessarily mean other big carbon emitters will follow suit. Look at China and India, how environmentally friendly policies do you think they have?

Basically every subreddit eventually devolves into a hivemind because dissenting voices consistently get downvoted until they just decide to leave (tyranny of the majority is guaranteed). Hard to believe, but r/politics was actually a libertarian stronghold long ago when Reddit first started. I haven't gone there since the 2012 election, but looking at it now was really jarring with how much of a change there is.

Nukes are bad primarily because they wreck the climate more than anything else.

The death toll is inconsequential by comparison.
