Just to get it out of the way, I'm not that big of a Saw fan. I've seen the first and second one, years apart, and I didn't particularly like the second one because of that dickhead Chad that fucked up the whole movie. I also saw 2 after my first viewing of Jigsaw, so if this sort of thing is important to you, then there's a chance of this viewing order causing bias.

If this information proves to be a factor that you feel colors my viewpoint of this movie in a less than agreeable way, feel free to disregard my opinion and walk away. Just getting this info out of the way to add context to my opinion that you may find useful.

So, Jigsaw.

It's very gory, but not to excess except in one or two glorious scenes. The plot is suitably twisty, and the suspense that the movie makes is genuine. I thought that the movie did a good job with its reveal at the end, some might consider it a copout but I thought it was a decent twist and a good way to carry on Jigsaw's legacy. I imagine that hardcore canon purists or whatever might have been a bit peeved, but I personally thought that it was tastefully executed. Also, the guy who plays Jigsaw has aged really well - he looks younger and healthier than he did in the second movie, which is a surprise considering it's been like 15 years since the second one came out.

The effects in this movie were really out of this world. There was one scene that stood out super hard as CG, and one of the gorier deaths was prefaced by what I felt was pretty bad chromakey. But there's a scene where someone is leaking blood out of a bunch of their orifices, and the way that the skin moves as blood rushes out of this person's face is just incredible. I love how the movie looks, there are some decisions that look a bit ehh but it's easy to just roll with the punches and enjoy it all.

I liked how all of the characters were portrayed. You've got your resident asshole who - annoyingly - seems to never get his comeuppance, you've got the "main" protagonist who the movie seems to focus on the most, you've got a range of extra characters with their own motivations and looks who exist mostly just for cannon fodder and you have the police team. I would say that the police team were the weaker part of the movie, but I liked most of the characters except for Halloran or whatever his name is. And I know that this is the point, he's an asswipe, but I just didn't like him in general. He looks like creepy IRL Johnny Depp.

Jigsaw is an entertaining movie that deserves a few of your bones. If you haven't seen it yet, I honestly recommend it. It has some cringe moments - meaning that some of the horror is just nasty and unwatchable in places, not like "epic lel Fortnite kid memes!!! Weed is dank and depression is a fuck, let's die in teh hell world!" cringe - but there are some magnificently gory deaths and the movie has a really decent sense of suspense. The angle that they take with the revival of the Jigsaw Killer was handled pretty well for what could be seen as a franchise reboot - not giving anything away, just saying that they've brought back Saw in a way where they can probably squeeze a few more flicks out of it. I really like this movie, and I think you could probably enjoy it over this coming Halloween.
