And when I say it... promise me you won't get upset." "Alright. What is it?" I inquired. "I'm...a furry." he said nervously. "Oh, um...cool! Yeah, um..that's..great! Awesome. Umm...yeah." I could tell that my response was making him extremely nervous. In a desperate and ill-advised attempt to get rid of the intense awkwardness of the moment, I blurted out a lie that would become the first link in a chain of many lies to follow: "I'm a furry too!!" "....really?" "Uh, yeah! Totally. I've been hiding it, just like you. I didn't want anyone to know. But now that I know that you're a furry too, I feel a lot better." "This...is...AMAZING!!!" he yelled through the earpiece. "I never knew you were a fur too!! Dude! This is awesome!" "Yeah, uh...it's great, right?" I mumbled. "Dude, you don't even know. There's so many things I've been wanting to do." "Wait--like what?" "Well, I mean, I've always wanted to make a fursuit, and...if you're a furry too, I was thinking that we could both make one, and go to a con together!" "Wow! Uhhmm...yeah! That's a good idea. I've seen some really good suits at those cons. You could make a great one, I bet, if you had the right materials." "Totally! Dude, I've gotta go, but get on Facebook later. I have some vids to show you." "Alright." "Cool, see ya dude!" Anyway, let's fast forward to the present. For the past couple years, I've been going along with it. He asked what my favorite animal is, and I said foxes (which isn't too far from the truth), so he went ahead and drew something called a "fursona" for me. He said that it's like an anthropomorphic animal counter-part to your normal self. "Alright, I drew it for you, but you have to give it a name."said Joseph. "A name?" "Yeah. Something personal. Just, a name that you like." "Ok, uhh...how about...Frank? Like, Frank the Fox. "Frank? Are you sure? Like, did you give it enough thought?" "Yeah, Frank is a pretty cool name. Frank. It just sounds dignified, you know?" I lied, hoping to hurry things up so that we could play video games instead of talking about furry foxes." "Ok, Frank the Fox it is then. Hi Frank!" I laughed. He wasn't really going to refer to me as that from now on, was he? Turns out, he was. He's been calling me Foxie Frank for years now. It's totally weird, but I don't say anything. As far as I'm concerned, as long as he keeps that s* on the down-low, I don't care what he calls me. Unfortunately, there have been a few times when he called me by that name in front of my other friends, and he then proceeded to tell them that I was a full-fledged furry. I spoke to him about it later, and told him to never, EVER, do that again, and we made a pact swearing that our furry identities were only allowed to be revealed by ourselves, on an individual basis. I thought that would be the end of any awkward furry crossovers with my friends and family, but Joseph wanted more. He wanted to start a business. Later that day, we went to a crafts store in our town, and I helped him pick out materials for his fursona, which he called "IceFire, the Snow Wolf". After we found some fabric that looked suitably "furry" and some boots that he could later modifiy into wolf paws, we made our way back to his house. He was so excited. I'd never seen him more happy in my life. I figured that, being a constant procrastinator, Joseph would eventually give up on his fusuit dreams. Unfortunately, he didn't. In the period of a few months, he worked tirelessly on his fursuit. It looked amazing. He consulted a bunch of internet guides on how to do it, and the end result was fantastic. I'm not even a furry, but even I could admire the sheer amount of detail that went into it. When he had the suit on, he looked like a walking, talking wolf. And it scared the f* out of me. Not in the sense that the costume was so realistic that I mistook him for a real wolf, but in the sense that I felt that he and I had crossed a certain societal boundary that I felt deeply uncomfortable with. You'd think that being a brony would've numbed me to thoughts about being "too different" or "too weird", but this...this was too much. "Joseph...what now?" I asked hesitantly. "Well, I was thinking we could start working on your suit now. And before you start saying how it's not worth the money, or how it's not going to be fun, just think about what it will be like to be at Anthrocon. You saw those videos I sent you! It looked fun, right? Everybody there was having a good time. Furries are the happiest people on the planet. We could get away from all the negativity here." "I don't know...I guess." "Look, are you a fur, or are you not? Because I've been seriously wondering lately." "I AM a fur!" I insisted, not wanting to hurt his feelings. What should I do? Should I tell him how he feel? That I've just been going along with his furry antics to make him feel good about himself?
