Decided to check out the original Doom, realized I really love how fast-paced it was. Ended up playing through the first three Quakes and then moved on to Doom II and 3.
It's weird how misplaced Doom 3 seems in the series. It seems to be doing a fair job at what it's going for, but later games did it much better and it simply doesn't have any of the charm from those earlier games. I thought that was simply a sign of how FPS games had changed with time, but now I'm on Doom 2016 and it's freaking majestic. But yeah; this was not a series I had expected to age well, and I was pleasantly surprised. I've been playing through a couple of Doom mods that try to apply Mario 64-style level design philosophy to the Doom formula. They're pretty damned amazing, IMO:

If you liked Doom and Doom 2, check out the expansion Final Doom. It has two campaigns, TNT:Evilution and The Plutonia Experiment. They weren't made by id themselves, but were officially licensed. Plutonia Experiment is especially good.
