Blame uninformed, undecided voters. The other match is a toss-up, but all Blastoise really has going for it is the cover of Blue. Squirtle is beloved for being one of the first starters, and it's cuter to boot. I give the edge to Squirtle, but I wouldn't be surprised if I was completely wrong either. MM represents the entire megaseries in a way X doesn't; he'll basically only get the votes of those who prefer the X games (and even then it's not a guarantee). I'm also inclined to cite Mega Man > Zero in the Charizard match as evidence of what the pecking order is there. If MM fans were going to side with his more mature/edgier incarnation, I feel like we'd have seen more evidence of it then. Squirtle > Blastoise also seems obvious. Anime (and associated memes like Squirtle Squad) + Smash is hard to argue with.
