And yet, every triple A dev feels obligated to include them.

Generally you're not meant to fill them out by the end of the game.

The past 4 AAA games I've played all had skill trees that I was able to fill out completely in a single playthrough.

The intent is to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment for unlocking different heroes.

As for cost, we selected initial values based upon data from the Open Beta and other adjustments made to milestone rewards before launch. Among other things, we're looking at average per-player credit earn rates on a daily basis, and we'll be making constant adjustments to ensure that players have challenges that are compelling, rewarding, and of course attainable via gameplay.

We appreciate the candid feedback, and the passion the community has put forth around the current topics here on Reddit, our forums and across numerous social media outlets.

Our team will continue to make changes and monitor community feedback and update everyone as soon and as often as we can.

Unless the end-game content is the majority of the content, and the skill tree won't be finished until close to the end of the game you'll still probably locked out of having all the abilities you want when they might come in handy.

You still get to choose how you progress and when you gain access to abilities, I do not agree

I prefer it that way. Simply don't use the points, then.

I wouldn't say they're pointless, usually even if you can eventually get everything, you usually have to spend points unlocking a specific section of a skill tree in a set order, so you still have to be smart about which part of the tree you choose to unlock first since you may not have the points to fill out the tree without a massive amount of grinding.

Games with trees that intentionally lock you out of certain skills are usually only necessary for multiplayer games where you can't have everybody the same (although more often than not most people just choose the optimal skill tree route anyway) or role playing games where your build determines how you progress.

Dragon Quest XI has them, even when you hit L100, you aren't maxing out the trees without like 80 Skill Seeds for extra points. And no one is hitting L100 during the main game, that is only happening with post game grinding.
