Started it blind last night (only thing I knew about it was that you kill monsters and you have a cat omg how could I not get it and he already has a rabbit skull helmet), and I am having a rough time finding a good weapon I like :\

I'm also having a hard time actually staying aimed at the enemy. I have the camera locked on to the enemy and it's tracking but I feel like I'll start an attack and it just moves away...

Don't use the auto lock or anything like that. Just run around freely, it's easier that way.

And may I suggest the greatsword? I think it's fun.

The Switchaxe is the coolest weapon!

Easiest starting weapon is probably going to be Long Sword, Bow, or Dual Blades.

yeah get used to playing unlocked, it's not like souls for instance where you swing towards the lock

personally i always liked dbs and longsword but it's really just a matter of playing around and finding a style of weapon you're comfy with

What weapons have you tried? Some are more new player friendly but all are viable.

Hammer is ridiculously easy to use for the early game. Constant stunning and breaking of parts for me.

As already said, DO NOT use autolock. It will just get you into trouble. A large part of the game is learning positioning, timing, and prediction. If you are starting an attack and the monster is moving then you haven't really watched the monster long enough to figure out its tells. Best time to attack is during a monsters attack that you aren't gonna be hit by. If you wait till he is doing nothing you are most certainly gonna miss.

Is there a way to strafe without jumping/dodging? I'll have to try some more.

So far I've only tried long sword, double blades and that gun lance (I *had* to try it, it looked so ridiculous. It is actually pretty fun when I happen to get the combo where you jab it into the enemy and then unload your ammo into it).

I wish they explained the combat a little bit more, too. Sometimes I string together some good combos or do something I didn't expect and sometimes it's just like one attack and then a pause.

You just have to experiment with button strings. And maybe do some research depending on how complicated the weapon is.

I like longsword because it's kind of a brain dead weapon. It's easy to combo in and out of the dodge slash which gives a very easy but very easy mobility option, and the meter isn't too complicated of a mechanic.

Meanwhile I'm playing with 900 IQ Insect Glaive players min maxing their Kinsect, jumping all over the place, and memorizing buff zones on monsters.

Edit: But every MH has a decent period where you just don't know what you're doing. That's just part of getting into the series. I played like 150 hours of Unite without fully understanding how the armor charms worked.

If you're still using gun lance, do Y+B, Y, and B to do a full burst, and can either reset by using RT+B to quick reload, or you can mash out Y to go into Wyrm stake (the pile bunker). You can also use Y+B while blocking to do big blast that takes about 2-3 seconds to charge.

There's a bit more to it, but it's better to look up videos or practice mode to figure out what combos you should do in different scenarios. When you get farther into the game it'd be best to look up skills you want from your armor, but it barely matters before High Rank.

horn. all about the horn.
it's not easy to use though, it's only for those that're actually skilled.

for fun, use gunlance. so good.

if you want supereasymode, go bow. can't go wrong, hits everything, not really weak, very agile.

Just got to play around to find a weapon you click with. As for camera issue, I forgot what setting I have but essentially I'll lock onto the monster but my camera will only focus back to the monster when I press a button. So essentially I'll track the monster on my own with the camera but if it goes too far out of view I'll have it autolock back to it

I'm a big fan of Hunting Horn. I couldn't even really get into the game until I started using HH.
Hammer is probably my suggestion for a new player. Or bow.

It is a very hard game to get used to, and I agree with the others about not using the lock on camera.
Rather than constantly trying stronger monsters, I found it better to have a go with several different weapons on one of the weaker early enemies (e.g. Great Jagras, Jyratodus or Pukei). You get a better feel for the ideal "flow" of the weapon when you're not dying all the time.
