Kids today can come out as liking superheroes like spiderman and not be made in fun of.

Brodudes unironically wear marvel merch to the gym.

But if you walk in wearing a wizard hat you are a creep and weirdo.

Like, no brodude takes his magic wand to the gym..........yet.

Came here to post LotR. You could make a case fantasy was bigger than superheroes; whether it will be again is another matter

The equivalent Marvel merch isn't a t-shirt; nobody's out here bring Captain America shields to the gym.

Before Batman Begins, superhero media was nowhere near as popular as it is now.

No. There's a reason why the Dr. Strange movie didn't do so well.

Same thing happened to Dune. It tried scifi without computers and robots. Never became mainstream.

It became big enough but fizzled out by the time TDK came out and the MCU began with LotR, HP, Narnia, and the other movies that were coming out. Thus they didn't have a chance to get too far from the nerd culture.

With TDK, Avengers and Winter Soldier, people saw that superhero movies can be done right and things blew up.

The problem with fantasy is you always end up with a lot of exposition which doesn't make for a good movie.

You don't have to explain Superman, why he's there, or why he does what he does. He just is. He's also on Earth, and he's from a town in USA.

With fantasy you've got a Hobbit (have to explain what a hobbit is) and he's taking a ring to Mordor (where is Mordor? what is it like? how far away is it?) to destroy it to prevent the resurrection of Sauron (who is Sauron and why can't you just kill him again the same way you did it the first time?)

If I say Superman flies from America to the Indian Ocean to destroy a world-ending machine we're done.

Star Wars and Iron Man belong to the Science Fiction genre, not Fantasy.

Fantasy movies usually take place in medieval settings with magic (Harry Potter is an exception). Anyway, LotR, The Hobbit and Harry Potter were huge. Fantastic Beasts is becoming a big franchise.
