Good story, main character is likable and has understandable motivations, awesome music, fun gameplay aside from maybe the driving.

There's the obvious reason why people don't like it.

Remember when people on here got upset about KKK being in the game and claiming it was anti-white. Yeah >_>

It was glitchy as hell when it came out.

Even after all the patches there were some strange occurrences going on... Like I walked into a diner where everything was out of place, it was kind of weird/jarring/unnerving.

Another common complaint is that 80% of the main game is what would be considered side content in other games. But I didn't really mind it.

My own complaints revolved around the lengthy ass missions for stocking your businesses and for building reputation with your lieutenants. I only really enjoyed those "friendship" missions for Vito.

The Bayou is literally just one giant blank spot on the map, there's really nothing there except some playboy mags and the business stocking missions which turn into boring driving sequences.

Still really loved the game though.

I thought it looks cool but haven't been playing new games much lately. I'll probably play it someday. I liked Mafia 2

The main missions were good but it got pretty repetitive at times. Combat was great also.

I liked it, but it was held back by virtually doing the same thing over and over. The variety was so limited for an open world game like that, it became so uninteresting midway through, it reminded me of Agents of Mayhem going through those underground bases 15 times and it felt like you were just replaying the same mission again and again.

Pretty much this. Whenever the game narrows its focus and its writing, characters and mission design take center stage, it's great. But the majority of your time with the game is typical open world fare

To be fair they tried to spice it up a bit with different types of rackets that you were tearing up, but the variety was really hit or miss.

I loved the sex orgy that you crash for instance but the ones where it's just like "drive over here and blow up a couple crates" were pretty uninspired.

The collectibles were well worth it though!!

I really like it. Definitely more than most. The story, atmosphere, setting, and characters were great. Even the villain was great and almost sympathetic. I even had fun with the admittedly repetitive gameplay. I've replayed it a few times. It just really needed some more work.

I'd really like a game with John Donovan as the main character.

I spend most of my time in open world games wandering around immersing myself, so I'll probably like it when I get around to it

I found it mostly enjoyable, but the repetition undermines a lot of the potential. Other than that, the plot, plot missions, soundtrack and gameplay are fun. I think I slit about 10,000 throats from stealth when I played, lmao. Whistling is OP.
