Ghost is a word puzzle game where each player is told the secret word and must come up with a cryptic hint for it. A small number of players are secretly chosen as ghosts. They dont know what the word is, and have to guess it based on these hints, while pretending like theyve known the word all along. Its a game that highly rewards creativity, as well as critical thinking skills. Read the full rules below!

Here's how the game works:

I will think of a secret word. Some players know the secret word, while others have to guess it. Each player is given one of those roles:

Ghost: Does not know the secret word. Knows who the other ghosts are. Wins by guessing the secret word.

Villager: Knows the secret word, must not allow the ghosts to figure it out. Does not know who is a villager and who is a ghost.

The secret word could be anything. For example: Oreo, China, Antelope, Hotdog, Link, Cloud, Samus, Rabbit, Cow, etc. Each round will have a different category, such as animals, food, video games, adjectives, etc. The ghosts will know the category and the number of letters in the word, but nothing else.

The game begins with the Hint Phase. I will send everyone their role, one by one. When I send you a Go!, you can post a hint for the word in the twitch chat. The hint should prove that you know the word, but shouldnt be so clear that it gives the answer away. The ghosts dont know the word; they will post a fake hint! Once everyone has given a hint, we move on to the main part of the game: the voting phase.

Once the game begins, everyone has a vote. Your goal, if you are a villager, is to vote out the ghosts! Look for the hints that dont make sense to you! You vote in the chat by saying ##Name with the name of the person you think is a ghost. If you are a ghost, you have to pretend to be a villager during this phase of the game. Once the majority has voted someone out, I will reveal if they were town or ghost, and the voting phase will repeat.

The town will lose if the number of ghosts alive is ever equal to the number of villagers. The town wins if they vote out all the ghosts. But watch out, there are penalties for accidentally voting out the villagers! Get it wrong too many times, and the ghosts will learn letters from the word. The ghosts can win by guessing the secret word. Each ghost has one guess to the word which they can use at any time, up until 5 minutes after they die.

There are 2 other roles in the game. The first is the fool role. A fool is exactly like a villager, except the word they are given by the host is wrong! So, if the word was apple, the fool might be told it is peach instead. This can really throw a wrench in things, so be careful! Additionally, there can be various special roles with special powers, but these are used very rarely.

The core mechanic of this game is the hint phase. You need to make a hint that is clear enough to show the other villagers that you know the word, but vague enough so that the ghosts dont get it. If you discuss too much, you give the ghosts more information to figure out the word. So you need to be efficient in figuring out which players are lying.

Because everyone has to be super vague as to not give away the word to the ghosts. Some are obviously wrong, but some blend in. Also some people that know the word try to get too fancy and people don't understand how they're connecting to the word.

Yeah, you have to be really vague or else the ghosts can guess the word pretty easily - but in being trying to be vague, people's hints end up seeming like total nonsense - so the ghost, who actually does submit total nonsense, can fit in.

It's not about being vague, it's about getting as far away from the word as possible in a way that only those who know the actual word could follow. Like if you google the word + your word it should be clear, but if the ghosts google all the given words it should not lead to the original word at all.

But that's only if everyone plays it perfectly. Usually there will be some easy hints given out, so you have to assume that the ghost will suspect the real word at some point. So you have to make it hard for them to confirm the word, which also makes it hard for your team to confirm. Then you have to convince your team not to lynch you if they don't quite understand it.

Hi everyone,

I've decided I am not going to host tonight after all.

While Ghost has been fun for many years, I'm finding that I'm not really into hosting it anymore. It is a lot of work, and I'm not smart enough to get most of the hints so I don't get much out of it.

I feel bad backing out on a commitment, but if I am not having fun, then there is no point, right?
