I'm a teacher.

As of right now my schedule for next school year is to teach 5th grade - 4 sections of Social Studies (which I like) and 2 sections of Math (which isn't my favorite but I don't hate it).

However I have an option for next year.
I can start with a 5th grade class in the morning and basically take attendance, then walk across the parking lot to the junior high and teach 2 sections of 7th grade Social Studies (never taught it before, but I love that group of kids), then walk back to the elementary and teach 4 sections of 5th grade Social Studies.

Pros of Change:
+ not teaching math
+ get to reteach kids I really like

Cons of Change:
- have to walk across the parking lot to another building every day
- sharing a classroom while in the junior high
- teaching a curriculum I have never taught before (have to create it all year)

are you doing more work with the change? or is your first class just like a 10 minute homeroom thing just to get attendance and then you leave? does it pay the same?

I would teach 6 sections either way so my teaching workload is the same. It would be more work in the sense that I never taught that grade level before so I would have to come up with what to do in class every day and to me planning is the hardest part of teaching.

But yea my morning in the elementary would basically just be homeroom/attendance type stuff.

Pay is the same no matter what I do.

So it's basically

A.)
-Six sessions, two of which are math
-No walk

or B.)
-Seven (barely, if "taking attendance" is as simple as it sounds) sessions.
-No math
-A walk
-Better kids

I mean as long as you're in an area where the climate isn't too extreme and the walk is really only a "parking lot," then yeah B sounds pretty good.

Question though, what do you mean by:

sharing a classroom while in the junior high

Like will there literally be two classes happening in the same classroom?

by sharing a classroom I just mean another teacher will be using it the rest of the day, it won't be "my" room only

I live in Ohio so obviously weather gets shitty in winter but I honestly don't care about that aspect too much.

I guess it depends on what your long term goals are. Do you think accepting the change would get you closer to where you want to go, or are you already where you want to be?

so like a 5 minute walk? if so take the change if you hate math that much and don't mind having to come up with new material. if you keep doing it then it'll only be this year to come up with new material and then you can just keep teaching the same stuff.

So in my district they are building a new jr high building and it will open in a few years and I pretty much have the option of staying in the elementary and teaching 5th grade, or moving to the new building when it opens and teaching 6th or 7th. So in a way this will be kind of a preview for me to see if I like the set up and atmosphere at the other building.

Also I always joked that I wouldn't go to the jr high cause they start an hour earlier and I don't want to get up earlier but this way I still start at the time the elementary starts at lol

Seems pretty minor. As long as they don't leave you with a huge mess or anything.

Yeah if it's a short walk then this seems negligible enough, especially if you don't mind it.
