I find it odd that we have 3 different conferences so far and they all showed off a mobile game.

C&C mobile game was a slap in the face

Elder Scroll mobile game was a slap in the face. (pre order the free mobile game, lol) but at least we were teased elder scroll 6... i mean that tease along with starfield tease was pretty aweful. They might as well teased Evil Within 3.

Then Gear Pop. Which i was like are they showing out funco pop merchandise... nope it's a mobile game. But at least afterwards they really showed a lot of gears 5.

Ok ok. what i found was hillarious that wasn't a mobile game. Was the Battletoad Teaser.... We don't have a screenshot or art design for anything battletoads but we do know the game will feature 4K HDR!

Might be hypocritical but the Bethesda one was fine. They had one before they released at E3 and it has been pretty well received.

As for the others... Well there is LOT of money to be made in mobile games for minimal effort.

Mobile gaming has been around for a while now, and like it or not it's here to stay.

Is it really all that surprising that video game makers would try to capitalize and tap into a market with an established user base numbered in the 100s of millions?

yeah but fortnight is a console game first.

These game feel like they were on the wrong conference. If they ported skyrim, C&C, and gears to mobile, i could totally understand them talking about it. But here are new game that are kind of dead ip that you wish they make a sequal to the mobile.

I'm just waiting for Sony to release there legend of Dragoon mobile game and it being a tower defense game... like plants vs zombie style.

I'm guessing because micro transactions aren't a controversial subject on mobile.

In spite of having been opened to the public and developing such a strong online presence, E3 is and always was an industry trade show - which means the goal isn't necessarily to show games to the general public that they're likely to like/enjoy/want, as much as it is to show off your current projects to other developers, reviewers, and press (and, to some extent, to your own stockholders). Which means you aren't necessarily going to run presentations the same way you'd run a pure PR campaign directed at your target consumers.

About a decade or so ago, Triple-A developers discovered they can make more money in mobile games than almost any other alternative - on an almost obscene scale. Which is part of why their development plans for the last couple of years have increasingly been to shoehorn manipulative mobile game-style microtransactions into full-priced games, so they can double dip on profit while fucking the consumer from both ends.

So that mentality is reflected in which games they're going to show. Even if that's likely to engender something of a negative response from the average hardcore gamer nerd watching presentations online. Because it's not really FOR us, in any way. It's for the millions of casual gamers who may not even know what E3 is, and certainly wouldn't care enough to pay attention to it even if they did.

Part of the growth process in mobile gaming. The industry on whole is going through growing pains right now as they wrestle with new tech, the rise in popularity in mobile gaming, that the current incarnation of VR may actually be more than a gimmick and might be legitimate and "have legs", figuring out how to stream games and have it be stable, the live-or-die with each new release that studios exist in now...

Mobile gaming has been featured at E3 in the past. Maybe not this high of a profile, but it's had a presence for years. It only makes sense given how many people own devices capable of playing games.

Yeah it all sucked. But I was really baffled they decided to lead with the Gears pop thing, thats the kind of thing you announce last not first. Are we made to think that thats more important than Gears 5 lol?

Said it before but rip C&C, had fond memories but now they're parading around its corpse.

The ES game seemed competant for a mobile game though.

Never heard of "saving the best for last" or having a "grand finale"? A mobile game is a great thing to lead with. Get it out of the way, then on to bigger and better.

Square enix did it right. They showed off Final fantasy 14 and then FF14 X Monster hunter. then there was a break Then they showed off Dragon Quest XI. Then they showed the moblie FF Brave x Dragon Quest XI event. Now i'm excited for the mobile game, because i can't wait for DQXI.

unlike what gears did. i was like i don't want to play that gears mobile game and then they showed gears 5 that i want to acutally play. If they revised it i might be excited more about the mobile game since i want to play gears 5.

Im begging the media gods to have mobile gaming crash the industry like it crashed in the 80s because gaming as an artistic medium of expression has gone waaaaaaay off course.

Now its all play through this game thats written EXACTLY like the hollywood blockbusters we know make money OR ELSE WE WILL COMPLAIN ABOUT HOW REVIEWS ARE WHY WE ARENT MAKING MONEY and glorified skinnerbox pay to win systems that preys on the lowest common denominator of casual gamers that dont realize they are being manipulated into spending money on things that cost nothing to produce.

Oh yeah, dont forget all the BEST GAME EVER review traps that are being pushed because of political reasons just like oscar bait movies that nobody actually really likes as much as they are told they should.

Just burn it all down. We have plenty of games to play for years as the market recoups and reformulates into something more than another branch of the media consumption machine.

I often have moments where I kind of look around the current state of the industry in disgust and bemoan the lost Good Old Days when games were designed to be fun or narratively interesting and/or fulfilling in some way, rather than developers trying to find new ways to incentivize addiction and turn the entire process into a money farm.

But then I remember that video games went through a very long span where they were deliberately coded to be hard as fuck and twice as bullshit, because the idea was to repeatedly kick the player in the dick so they'd have to keep pumping quarters into the machine (and most of the reason "Nintendo Hard" is a concept in the first place is because developers kept making games that way even after they stopped release them in arcades and started pushing them on consoles - it took a while for the idea that games could actually be about player ENJOYMENT rather than players' willingness to spend their entire allowance). And when I remember that, it gets a bit harder to really call the game industry out on its bullshit, because in some ways, it feels like it's just going back to doing what it used to do all the time, only on a much grander scale.

To be fair, though, it still annoys the piss out of me, and those developers can still go fuck themselves with a rusty fork.
