I'm reading this source book and it's confusing as fuck..

But I got the sense that Confucianism reinforced Chinese thought and philosophy. In addition, it placed an emphasis on education and the literati. In doing so it created a system that was hierarchical, and there was less emphasis on the emperor.

So by the Han the ruler is already a figurehead?

No. Confucianism was legally enforced by the Han so as you could expect it had some confusing contradictions since the whole philosophy is about choosing to do the good thing because it's the good thing and not because Government officials are forcing you to do it.

I like randomly encountering educational content. I don't know much about this though, so I'll mostly be lurking.

Is that the filial duty of a daughter?

It mentioned this in a paragraph...I think the paragraph emphasized how it's important to Chinese culture..but it didn't cite it.

Looked it up. They mention this in passing as well...

Yeah basically after the Qin dynasty collapsed the Han said "okay legalism was a huge failure we're doing this Kung Fuci thing here now."

Kung Fuci was really big on filial piety of daughters and sons and how husbands and wives should conduct each other and a huge book of what he considered good manners "the gentleman"

Some stuff in it wouldn't really fly today, especially about women, but most people would find the stuff he expected of men to be a little tough to swallow as well.
