Since it started getting warmer they have been in the backyard with their kids every day but basically their interaction is

"Stop that, right now!"
"Come here, right now!"

Then they do this dumb count down thing (like if they count down then their kids are just going to magically stop misbehaving because they will have learned the consequences of not listening if they reach 1).

It's actually annoying as hell. We like to leave the door open so the cats can look outside and get some fresh air and stuff and they are loud and obnoxious.

Makes me want to not have kids, not because they have bad kids, but because they have good kids despite being annoying ass parents and I am afraid of being an annoying ass parent.

No it doesn't. If you reach 1 and then punish them, you're teaching your kids they don't have to listen to you until you get fed up. If you punish your kid for not listening the first time you tell them to do something they'll listen the first time you tell them to and you won't have to count down.

I agree with this.
Also I don't think you need to threaten to punish your kid over every. single. thing. The parents are literally being louder than the kids. And the kids are just being kids.

And if you *are* going to threaten to punish your kid then you actually need to do it, not just shout at them and argue with them for half an hour.

It never gets to 1. They're too scared of what could happen that they stop at 5 or sooner. There's very few ways to punish a child, I hate that word tbh

What would you call it? "Conditioning" them?

Especially when they do that "Two...two and a half!" shit. And usually when they get to three, they don't really do anything. They just tell them to stop even louder.

You're joking right? Why would a kid care about what happens at 1 if they have never experienced what happens at 1? I can assure you that as a parent that properly disciplines their kid with a wife that has since just started properly disciplining our children there is a world of difference between when I say something and when she says something. When I say it, the kids do it and they do it now, otherwise they are put in to a timeout. Before she started actually disciplining properly she would use those kinds of things like counting, in a hope that they would listen. They rarely did and never took her seriously. Since she has started using the "your told once, or else method" they listen a lot better.

Maybe it's a technique that works. But I don't think it's a technique that has to be applied every five minutes for every little thing. It sounds like their sole interaction with their kids is shouting at their kids to do stuff so.

Your anecdotal evidence vs. mine says that it's less effective. I don't have to count and my kids listen you have to count for your kids to listen.

it's like almost three hours after I made this topic (and they were already at it before I made it) and I just heard the mom go out and start yelling again

don't you get tired of yelling at little kids?
