I was expecting them to be ... like more blue than they were (they weren't blue at all >_>).

Good as hell, but kinda gross cleaning them out.

Yes. The sad thing is we live there, and this restaurant's only five minutes from our house and we never tried it before rofl.

Are the blue crabs different from other crabs then? It tasted like crab to me (good but I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between blue or... not blue).

Although we are probably all most familiar with Maryland blue crabs, this is not the only state where blue crabs are found. In fact, they can be found from Nova Scotia all the way down to Uruguay! But many connoisseurs consider Maryland blue crabs to be superior to all other varieties thanks to their delicate texture and buttery taste. Turns out that these features are thanks to their upbringing in Maryland waters.

Thanks to our 4 distinctive seasons, Maryland blue crabs have to hibernate over the winter which allows them to build up fat reserves. These fat reserves, also known as the mustard, give their crab meat a delicious depth of flavor that you simply wont find in any other types of crabs. You can even tell a Maryland blue crab from other blue crabs by looking at the mustard: Maryland crabs feature mustard that is a much darker shade of yellow than other blue crab varieties.

While some prefer Dungeness crabs from the West Coast thanks to the fact that they are larger and therefor easier to eat, true crab lovers know that Maryland blue crabs are far superior in flavor which makes the work of picking through them completely worth it. Roughly half of the total US blue crab harvest comes from Maryland so we are lucky to be able to enjoy the freshest, most delicious crabs that came from our own waters. Enjoy one of Marylands most spectacular local products by indulging in homegrown Maryland blue crabs.

See, those crabs on that site look blue and grey but the crabs we ate were red. So do they turn red from the seasoning and being cooked or being dead or did we not eat real blue crab >_>.

Also I'm curious about this "mustard" they mention - I noticed when I cracked it open it had this yellowish paste that did look kinda like mustard but I also imagined it could have been fecal matter or urine or something so that was kinda gross.

Thanks for posting that information, I figured they were in other places on the east coast but didn't know they were all the way down in South America too.

They're red once they're seasoned and cooked, blue before cooking.

Yeah the yellow paste stuff would have been the mustard. Personally I'm indifferent to it, it's ok, but I don't go out of my way to eat it if it's not already on a piece of meat I'm eating.

I love doing all you can eat crabs in ocean city, or getting a bushel or something and eating with family. If you have the patience to sit and eat them it can be really good, and with butter and old bay too :)

lol, 6 crabs between 3 people was enough, can't imagine doing all you can eat. But we'll probably be in Ocean City at least once this summer since it's so close, so maybe we'll check that out. These things were drowning (suffocating?) in Old Bay, it was great.

So in Texas and Louisiana are they the most common type of crab you might find at restaurants?
