What no one realizes is that Javert's father was a silversmith and that the stolen candlestick was created by said father only weeks before he was killed during one of several skirmishes with the Austro-Hungarian empire. There is an inscription from father to son hidden on the bottom of the candlestick and as a matter of honor, Javert believed the candlestick belonged in the church where he had buried his father. Valjean, on the other hand, actually left his father on the frontlines to be killed by the Hungarian Empire in a rash of utter cowardice, so the revenge is doubly personal after Valjean callously steals the work of the man he once betrayed in a moment of crisis. Valjean is a traitor, a thief and a coward. And Javert, having witnessed this behavior, dedicates his life to the capture of Valjean. If he had been successful, this would have evolved into a mission of vigilante justice. Valjean, on rooftops, leaping from building to building, using his preternatural agility under a mask as he assumed the name Nightrunner. Nightrunner, written by Frank Miller with art by David Mazzuchelli, coming September 1990.

You're telling me Javert, who's response to fantine saying she can't go to jail or her child might die is basically "yeah well you should have thought of that before you broke the law, b!nch" wouldn't care about these apparently super ciminals? sure eventually he gets distracted by valjean's huge muscles, but still

In the book they never meet, Marius choosing not to turn them in after realising M. Thenardier was the man who saved his father's life in the war.

In the musical, in the one occasion they meet, M. Thenardier effectively is let free after giving info on Valjean's whereabouts.

In the book, they ARE arrested. The woman presumably dies in jail. The man escapes with a bunch of his other criminal buddies and continues his hinjix. He helps Jean Valjean (carrying Marius' wounded body) escape the sewer because Javert was following him, and he knows Javert would rather track Valjean instead.

The scene in the book where Marius is telling Thenardier what a scumbag he is while shoving money at him gave me some good laughs.

Then I think he took the money and he and one of his daughters became slave traders? Which kinda took the laughs out of it.

That book info is interesting, thanks! Glad to know justice was kind of served somewhere.

You know what I think the weirdest song of the whole thing is? The one gabroach sings after Javert pretends to be a teen. He identifies Javert.... and then goes on to talk about all things little kids can do??? gabrocah please, this isn't the time or place for your rambunctious style

It's a legacy piece from when Little People was a stand along song that was functioned as Gavroche's theme. It was removed from the show, but the reprise there was left in.

We all know The Confrontation is the best song in the whole thing, but one of my favorite parts is how basically one of the lines is "You can't beat me Javert, my power level is too high"

The 2012 movie isn't even bad, people give it way more hate than it deserves. Honestly in terms of actually telling the story I feel like it's the best you're going to get short of reading the book. The best musical renditions of it put the story to the side and are mostly presented as a concert - the songs are godly in those performances but for someone looking to experience it for the first time I'd honestly say the movie is better.

I've only really seen the movie and the 10th Anniversary Dream Cast concert. The concert was great renditions of the songs, but the actual story would be hard to follow if that was the first thing you've seen of Les Mis. A friend let me borrow the DVD of this 25th Anniversary performance, maybe that is a better way to see the story?

The 25th is a concert just like the 10th. Absolutely worth watching, though!

So I'm watching the 25th, and it is definitely more performative than the 10th. Is this how Les Mis actually is? More of a concert than and actual play? But I see on the screen scenes like Valjean lifting the cart, does that stuff happen in other performances of the musical?

Les Mis is more a play, it's just that version that does it concert like.

Another thought I had about Les Mis - who the hell are all the people at the wedding at the end? Cosette was a shut in with no friends and all Marius' friends died.

One thing I've noticed is that I guess the 10th anniversary concert leaves parts of songs out? I knew parts of the story would be there, but like this part from the Runaway Cart:

"I have known the thief for ages
Tracked him down through thick and thin.
And to make the matter certain
Theres a brand upon his skin
He will bend. He will break.
This time there is no mistake!"

Is not in the 10th anniversary version. Which is a little crazy, since this establishes that Javert has been actively hunting for Valjean.
