Also When Ryuk said you can go ahead and try to write my name in the book, he said the farthest people got was two letters. What is he implying ?

Ryuk was supposed to be a villain?

Ive only seen the anime and he was pretty much an unbiased observer.

Ryuk doesn't care who wins or loses. He's just hanging around because he was bored in the other world and wanted some fun. The only time he ever helped Light was so he could eat apples.

also only the movie had the apparent rule that you could kill a shinigami with a notebook. the anime doesn't have that rule.

He wasn't a villain so much as a facilitator.

Yeah, at the end of the day Light wouldn't have caused so much damage if Ryuk hadn't been bored and just wanted to see some chaos... but Light could have chosen to be ambivalent.

I haven't watched the movie but in the manga and anime he pretty obviously is a villain. Not the worst, sure. But giving someone the power to commit mass murder, and then sitting back and watching while they do it, just because you are bored, is pretty villainous in my opinion.

In the manga/anime, that's just how shinigami work. When they kill someone with their Death Note, the lifespan that person would have had without the DN interfering is added to the shinigami's lifespan.

Not sure why you brought up humans and demons anyways. Countless fantasy and space stories have non humans who view humans as insects or cattle. Being a villain is based on actions.
And about indirectness
