Alien was literally the first thing that came to mind when you said this, tbh. And yeah, I enjoyed Aliens. Terminator 2 also took the franchise from horror (robot Michael Myers) to action and, while I didn't like that movie as much, it had some great action scenes. And I love Gremlins 2 which was a lot heavier on the comedy and more child-friendly than Gremlins 1 (partly because I liked the variation in Gremlins -- still half-kicking myself for not buying NECA's Bat-Gremlin. Going to need to see what the after-market prices look like now.)

Most major genre shifts tend to be hit or miss, though.

Gremlins 2 is freakin crazy

did you ever seen the Key and Peele sketch of Gremlins 2?

i get it, because gremlins 2 was a kids movies, but the first one was sort of a horror movie for kids. Even though it has the most f- up christmas horror story ever told on film.

Gremlins 2 is almost a parody of the first film, but you can tell they just decided to have a lot of fun with it

Evil Dead was a sort of cringey, shitty, b-list attempt at a horror movie

Evil Dead 2 was pure comedy. the creators realized how campy it all was, and leaned into it hard, throwing any notion of horror out the fucking window

Army of Darkness didnt even try to look anything like a horror movie, and leaned even harder into the goofy comedy shit

Also brings to mind House and House 2: The Second Story. The original was a horror-comedy (involving an alcoholic author experiencing supernatural events after moving into his deceased aunt's place and chooses to stay since he believes that it might hold clues to the fate of his missing son).

The sequel was an action/fantasy involving a guy who discovers his zombie cowboy great, great, great, etc, grandfather where they then race another zombie cowboy to find a magic skull (and it's actually even goofier than it sounds). Enjoyed them both. Third and fourth apparently go in other different directions, although they're more horror. Haven't seen either, although I'm mildly curious about the fourth. The third doesn't even have "House" in the name in the US.

I liked Aliens and Terminator 2 more than the original.

Can't think of any other sequels I've seen that genre shifted like that though.

Blair witch was a documentary and Blair Witch 2 was straight up hollywood horror movie.

Mad Max was about revengeance movie... there was still cops and grass and life. Mad Max 2 was post apocalypse movie with no law.

And both were pretty awful for very different reasons.

Terminator 2 was better than Terminator,

The original has the better story, the sequel has the better special effects.

Alien is my favorite movie of all time, don't care much for Aliens.

First movies I thought of were 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later. 28 Days is amazing just in general, and 28 Weeks is an ok action movie.

This is what I was wondering. Are they different sub-genres of action or something?

Yes. The first was basically Halloween with a robot (so... like Halloween 3, but less goofy) whereas the sequel was more of a straight-up action film. T1 they were badly outclassed and running from a nearly unstoppable killing machine, T2 you had a robot who could fight another robot and, while he wasn't as strong, he could hold his own at times.

I usually love them, because they try to be original.

Aliens might be the best sequel of all time imo, for just that reason. Although I still like Alien better as a movie

We try to pretend Highlander 2 and 3 didn't happen. Highlander 2, especially is an abomination.

IMDb.com lists both as "Action, Sci-Fi". I think I trust their categorization more.

James Cameron says T1 is a Tech Noir film. It had more suspense, and dread behind the Terminator and little humor. T2 was a lot more lighter and actiony.

The series is solid, even if they turned it into movies that totally retconned the original movie into not happening.
