Oh boy, I'd love to know where my ancestors came from, but given how colonization worked, I HAVE NO FUCKING CLUE.

DNA tests can help somewhat with that.

I think he meant for curiositys sake more than anything. Being forced to buy a DNA test just to fill this shit out would be stupid.

Whoo NPR's stellar unbiased non-agenda driven reporting. Because they're going to ask all ethnicities that question.

Hell you were so busy searching for your zinger you couldn't look two tweets below the tweet you talked about.

The entire census needs to be simplified to exactly one question anyway:
"How many people live here?"

What's the point of this topic exactly? They're adding additional origin categories for people who check "white" also.

https://www.npr.org/2018/02/01/582338628/-what-kind-of-white-2020-census-to-ask-white-people-about-origins

EVERYONE will be given a blank space so if they can/want to put down information, it'll happen. Also makes for a much simpler form that everyone receives.

I can't wait for a bunch of white people who are like 4% Irish by genetics but thanks to one great great great grandfather who was actually Irish and kept the namesake, that that's how they identify instead of them being 4% any other nationality.

I say after about 2 or 3 generations, if everyone in the immediate family was born in the states -- you are American.

But if we went that route people couldn't cry about their culture being stolen or have fake pride in where they came from.

Whites are probably better able to trace their origins in Europe.

If they came to U.S. the same time as the African slaves, that's doubtful. Anything beyond 3 generations is very difficult to trace for anyone. African Americans have longer roots in the U.S. than many white ethnicities who immigrated here in the late 19th/early 20th century, so of course they're not going to know their African origins in many cases.

Admiral, you seem really interested in the history and heritage of black people. Did you study anything like that in school or is it purely out of your own personal fascination?

If only.

It'll just transfer to local pride and culture, like caring about your state and being insulted when someone from Wyoming attempts to make gumbo.

Yeah, but you deliberately chose a play-on-words based on being a furry. Why'd you do that? Could have chosen any number of account names to be "witty?"

Yeah, I mean as in a family tree, not a genetic profile.

There's people unironically suggesting those ancestry kits that
1) can and will own the rights to your DNA
2) aren't accurate worth a darn because they're based on a lot of assumptions and variables that aren't even true of all "full blooded" members of certain ethnic groups (especially Native American tribes given the limited number of DNA samples from them they'd have for comparison)

Maybe they just want to know how many have been here for the last 400 years, and how many are from very recent generations. No way descendants of slaves will know what part of Africa they come from, unless you're Alex Haley. Maybe they could just fill in "Africa".

In Puerto Rico we say "el que no tiene Dinga tiene Mandinga" (that who doesn't have Dinka has Mandinka), because supposedly most slaves brought there came from those tribes/people, and everyone has black blood in them. Also, everyone has white Spaniard blood, and native Caribbean/Tano blood.
Do I fill in "Spain", "Africa", or "Caribe" for origin?
