When I was a kid, this was one of the most hyped up series of all time. Years later, I finally played a good amount of the series. Everything is out of order btw

Main Series

FFX is probably the strongest out of the ones I played and my favorite (right before VII)

FFIV is a close third

I loved VII but I don't think it is the best, but it was by far one of my favorite games in the series due to how silly it was. IDK why people never talk about the game's quirky dialogue, it is amazing

I hated VIII at first but I grew to like it when the final boss was a witch (finally, woman villains)

IX sucked hard, very overrated and the ending boss made no sense. Characters were a mess besides the knight and the girl he gets with at the end. Main character was so-so, princess was forgettable.

I do not remember III... probably wasn't that good

Need to finish VI, the villain and story are great

V would have been awful without the amazing job system

I was boring, didn't pass the first boss

II...

Never Played XI or XII

Really liked XIII but to be fair that was my very first FF I completed. I can see why playing X first would skew your view on its impact on the series

XIV is dumb MMORPG

Haven't touched XV in months

Crystal Chronicles

Gamecube version was amazing. The DS games weren't too bad

Tactics

Well... did not like it (PS1 version). However the GBA game was miles better imo, The sounds in the PS1 version were so out of touch with the game (farts, really). I did like some of the jobs though that were random but ended up being very good (Calculator)

That's it

And this is where you receive a tour of the Pit of Misery, my friend.

I've only played 7, 8, 9, and FFTA. Didn't the series go downhill after the PS1 or did I hear wrong?

Sorry but the game had so much potential, great ideas story and gameplay wise but it just fell short for me lol. The GBA version was at least decent for a GBA game

The stories in the later ones are complicated for no reason but the music is still amazing. Gameplay depends on your preferences of turn based vs action

X is meh. I know I'm in the minority but I actually like XII. XIII is like X but even more meh. XIV is great. Never touched XV. Not really interested in it.

I've played them all.

Overall, Tactics is #1, no contest. Game's pretty much flawless in both gameplay and story.

Now, main series it would probably be:

VIII (First FF I finished, only bad thing is the draw system, but card/item modding solves that)
X (Beautiful game, way too easy though)
VI (Best story overall IMO)
VII (Golden era of JRPGs on PSX, a true gem)
XIII (Really fun combat, I don't mind the linearity)
IX (Great nod to older 2D FFs, but I agree that it's overrated by nostalgia freaks)
XII (Amazing combat, gambits were very well implemented so the semi-afk grinding was cool IMO)
LR (Really fun combat)
XIII-2 (Closest thing to a Pokemon/FF hybrid. Time travel was done well too)
X-2 (Lots of content on this one. Didn't like being unable to skip cutscenes without compromising completion %. Turned replayability into an issue)

Then everything else for different reasons.

Special mentions to Crisis Core and Type-0, both very good portable JRPGs with lots of hours to enjoy.

Can you please post why you think it's great?

I am still trying to wrap my head on the praise it gets

I also didn't like X. I felt like it was 20 minutes of an actual story spread out over hours of gameplay. The plot was dumb, the characters were boring, and the combat wasn't anything special.

Character design, good plot with a decent pace, the widest array of classes and customization in a JRPG until that point, challenging difficulty, and more. FF Tactics improved Tactics Ogre (one of my favorite games ever) in basically every aspect, and at the same time it paved the way for games like Disgaea to become popular in the west.

These are all based on preference though, feel free to disagree.

And then the Tactics Ogre remake for PSP did it one better, IMO.
