I love the fact that all the side content is part of the main story and you can do as much or as little of it as you want. And the collectibles include erotic paintings and Playboys.

Does it ever go beyond "clear out house/backyard full of rednecks, rinse, repeat" though?

Well, that is kind of the bulk of the side "tearing down the business" mechanic, but they do throw some twists in there every once in a while (like having to blow up a crane for one business). For the most part it's pretty straightforward, though - roll in, kill some fools, smash a crate and steal some cash.

I don't know anything about the DLC , so I've kind of been trying to pace myself by doing a couple territories/main missions and then doing a DLC. That helps break things up a bit.

About the only mechanic I'm not enjoying is the "pick up drugs from the edge of the game boundary and drive all the way to the opposite end of the map boundary." I don't know why they even have it since you just have to do it once per Racket and then forget about it...

For some reason bashing in bigots' faces for telling me off when I walk into a pharmacy doesn't stop feeling good. And there are some interesting glitches/moments to experience.

Do all those racing games you play ever go beyond "drive in a circle, rinse, repeat?"

Yeah, I remember combat being really fun.

This is fair (though I'd argue yes for some of them). I suppose I'm more sensitive to repetition in open-world games than I am racing games. Driving missions are even some of my favorites in the former category, too.

The major setpiece missions are well done, but the majority of the game is typical open world nonsense

If that game had been released as a new IP instead of as "Mafia III" it would have a metacritic in the 80's and a sequel announcement by now.

Yeah it's kind of typical open world stuff but the fact that it ties directly in to the story / main game progression makes it stand out a bit I think.

Oh I also love how screwed up the AI is, there's a design flaw or glitch where, once you kill one guy, another one will come to investigate. They usually go one at a time. I think I killed about 15 people this way, I just had a giant stack of bodies that was almost as tall as the crate I was crouched behind just waiting for these guys to come around the corner and get shanked.

It was really, super janky at launch. I remember having to restart a mission because the car I was supposed to drive an NPC around in wouldn't start (or something along those lines). But I loved the story and how it was presented.

I feel like very few games are ... not janky at launch. It's pretty sad. And even with the patches that certainly came out before I bought it, I'm still encountering some annoying issues here and there (for instance, pressing X to start a mission at an NPC doesn't always start the mission and then I have to reload the checkpoint, or I've had a couple problems now where I just get a black cutscene and at the end I have to "skip it" or else I just sit on a black screen).
