I can understand in historical times, using these beasts for utility purposes. I don't understand the current "fur babies" trend, people who leave the animals outside all day to go neurotic etc. What do people get out of enslaving these creatures in modern times?

How turbonerd do you have to be to not understand pets?

You tell me - you're the one holding some beast captive for your own amusement

If you're leaving your pet outside all the time you're doing it wrong.

It's a very mutual relationship... Animals bring people happiness and vice versa (if you actually take care of your pets, and don't just abandon them in your apartment when you move). Dogs provide security from intruders. Cats provide security from rodents (yes even living in a city you can still get a mouse every once in a while).

And they're like the best friends. They don't judge you or talk too much or get you into trouble. They're just these pure little beings you can play with. And they come lay down with you when you're feeling bad.

You can tell that to the guy who lives behind me who's in court now for allowing their dog to bark excessively

I guess I should caveat that my post is meant to reflect responsible pet "owners".

I was pretty sick and mostly just sleeping for the last two days. My cat was curled up next to me the entire time.

CAPTIVE? The back door to my house stays open all day in the summer, the dog could run away whenever the hell he wanted. We only close it at night because of the raccoon incident, and the bat incident.
