Lots of forced updates.

I am not exaggerating.

But you can customize shit you don't need right?

:P

Seriously, I do believe they collect more data and stuff. I didn't trust a "free" upgrade of an OS because it was too good to be true, imo.

I stayed with Windows 8.1 and it runs fine.

I go from Windows 7. I guess I just should update to make my PC run better or something, plus it's better updated and stuff. And since the free update ends on sunday gotta see if I should do it.

I upgraded from 8 about a year ago.

Things in Windows 10 I like:
-Much better desktop management; Task View and Work Spaces are amazing features that I've wanted Windows to have for a long time.
-Better File Explorer. I don't remember what was better about it but there were a handful of new things I really liked when I first installed Windows 10.
-Start menu! Although Windows 7's start menu was a little better, you can pin tiles to it like Windows 8's start screen which is pretty nice.

Things I don't like:
-Too many forced updates. Microsoft has supposedly been putting forth effort to make the updates less annoying. It might just be placebo, but they don't seem to be as bothersome as they were when I first started using Windows 10.
-Spying. During the installation you can turn off a lot of the information gathering Windows does but apparently it still does some gathering anyway.
-Start menu is a bit messy compared to 7 and the search is trash.

I never noticed anything over-the-top with "forced" updates tbh, it felt the same as when I used Windows 7.

The Start menu is a huge improvement over 8/8.1, and it's actually really functional when you get used to it. And if you don't like it there are programs out there to change its appearance.

The one thing I just really hate in 10 is the interface. There's no Windows Classic theme any more and the interface looks barely better than in 8 (still looks like a twelve year old's incomplete DeviantArt project though).

It constantly tries to update automatically for me even when I am doing something. I even turned the settings off and messed with the library a little, but it never goes away.

I've literally never had this issue.

It updates maybe at most twice a month for me, if that, and it always tells me it has an update ready to install and asks if I want to restart immediately or schedule a later time (and it always chooses a time I'm never using the computer at).

Since you're coming from 7, you should know that you can still search in the Start menu (shortcut is the Windows key), AND you can also search with the built-in search assistant Cortana (shortcut is Windows key + Q).

Maybe it is just me but I started noticing that it happened more and more with every update. Nowadays I get at least one attempted update every day trying to force me into the Creators' update to which I say "nope".

Maybe if you ... updated the computer it would stop telling you it needs to update...

You can disable it but can't really uninstall it (though you *can* set Windows to a language and region where Cortana isn't enabled... I had mine set to Swedish for a while and the assistant couldn't do crap).

Oh another thing: Some settings are in the Settings menu, and some are still in the Control Panel. This is probably another thing that bugged me when I was first setting it up.

Yeah you can disable it and set your search to only search your local computer. Do those two things and you basically have the Windows 7 search bar.

Google "windows 10 services to disable" to find lists that people have made of services in the services.msc that you don't need. Don't have a printer? Then disable the print spooler. I recommend this for all Windows OS though. The less running in the background, the better.

Windows 10 has a much improved copy/move file function. It's probably 5x faster to copy something now than in Win7.

Oh. Another thing. As with most (all?) operating systems, major updates can cause issues. If you happen to run into any issues, try installing Windows 10 from scratch. IIRC it gives you the option to keep software and personal files in place so you shouldn't have to back anything up.

You can absolutely block updates and automatic restarts on Windows 10.

Ok things are running smoother, updated to Win 10 (pro) and updated my mobo and bios drivers, tune up and stuff. Even games have better fps.

Win 10 doesnt seem as annoying as I thought for now.

Sounds like you skipped Windows 8. Although Ive only used 8.1, I think Windows 10 has gone past The teething pains of 8.

Yeah windows 8 was terrible. They screwed it up with 8.1 and the DPS scaling just got screwed up so I went back to 7 lol.

@FF_Redux - If you right-click the task bar do you see Cortana options under the Toolbars item?
Also a lot of things are "off" cosmetically but still working in the background.

If you care that much you can download Spybot's Anti-Beacon tool: https://www.safer-networking.org/spybot-anti-beacon/ that'll let you automatically disable (permanently even) and re-enable at the touch of a button a lot of the spying stuff.

I don't know. I've heard it doesn't make a huge difference, I've heard it makes no difference, I've heard it can ruin certain features on 10... I never noticed any performance hits personally but I also don't know how effective it is.
