A common practice these days when outsourcing is to use India. What happens is, a company will let people know they're being laid off as a cost cutting measure. They will then need to train their Indian replacement in order to get severance. Would you stay and train your Indian replacement if you were getting laid off?

Yeah, getting paid to do the bare minimum of work/training by getting the guy to do the work while I vaguely tell him what to do seems like the best option in that case

My friend worked in a call center where they put out a posting for six agents to go to the Phillipines for six months to train employees of a call center. Turns out they were training the people who would replace their entire work unit.

No. A layoff is automatic 100% pay unemployment in my state, but if you accept a severance you're automatically disqualified from UB. The severance would need to be a year salary or more to justify it, and I doubt they'd be offering more than 3 months.

This is what IBM is doing a lot of. Before they laid my mom off, they were having her train people in India on how to do her job. They also cut the severance package down from 6 months of pay to 1 month of pay before they laid her off. Fortunately, she had enough years to get her pension.
