The two big fighting franchises of the 90s.

There were kids who thought that MK was cooler and SFII was lame, because of MK's violence and more realistic graphics, even though SFII was mechanically the much better game.

I grew up with more experience with MK (and I don't even think I knew what SF was back then), even though I didn't really like the games.

Mortal Combat, but just because ABACABB and fatalities were the coolest thing going when I was eight years old.

I had MK3 on the SNES, but I've never owned a SF game. I was way more into Smash when that came out towards the end of the 90s.

street fighter. I loved street fighter 2 at arcades. Bought Street Fighter 2 Turbo on SNES for $20 from Toys R Us in like 1994 or so and I played the shit out of it. Rented MK games a few times and got MK3 for xmas 1 year but returned it because renting it once was enough.

SF was king until killer instinct.

I owned multiple versions of both. Even at that age we knew SF2 was the more serious technical fighter (all the really competitive players at the arcades properly studied it) but that didn't stop the Mortal Kombat games being a hell of a lot of fun.

MK. In fact I'm pretty sure Mortal Kombat Trilogy is still my most hyped game of all time. It was insane how excited I was for that game

Aside from the SF2 arcade cabinet and SNES port I've never been a huge fan of the series (though it is a better designed game than MK)

MK until I actually owned/played them for more than the time it took to waste a quarter on a machine. Then SFII, because I thought it played better, and its expansions were better.

I got really caught up in the MK hype when the game and first movie happened, but apart from that window of time, I've preferred Capcom's offerings. MKX was a lot better than SFV though.

Without sf2 no mk.

Going back sf2 is better to play, all mk had was that shock factor.

Either way the 90s ruled for gaming

I wanna preface this by saying I haven't played any recent fighting games and I've never been a hard core fan.

But I've recently gone back and played a lot of these old fighters (not MK though, actually) and now of them seem to hold up to me lol

I agree with all of the above. MK didn't become legitimately good to play until 9 when they semi-rebooted things. I consider the MK games before Dark Alliance almost unplayable now, really, they exist merely for novelty...

Definitely Mortal Kombat.

And I agree with the others that MK1 (and to a lesser extent 2) were kind of shit. 3 / Trilogy were fucking hot though.

4 was one of the various god awful attempts to make a 3D fighter work because everything had to be 3D like every web page had to be entirely in flash.

5 and 6 were really good, I felt. Disappointed with what happened to Shujinko, though. I liked the concept of his character a lot.

I wish they'd make another MK: Shaolin Monks. It was like Power Stone, but better.

MK2 was the best in the franchise. Not for gameplay, obviously, but for tone, atmosphere, soundtrack, and the roster of characters. 3 wasn't nearly as impressive. The series didn't start to get decent again until Deadly Alliance, as far as I'm concerned. But 4 was better than 3 and its iterations.

I can see why people didn't like 3/UMK3/Trilogy even though I loved those games, but I just never understood the praise of Deadly Alliance. Looking back it seems it was decently reviewed, but I remember being so let down by it. Honestly aside from the crypt there was very little I enjoyed. Deception and Armageddon fixed those problems somewhat, but still the games lacked a lot of the things that made the old games so fun.

Oddly 4 also kind of felt like this, but I really enjoyed that game

Not being able to make the combos and mostly just doing the ones that end in you bringing out your weapon ruined it.
